Payment of Witnesses’ Expenses in Indictable Cases dealt with summarily. (Circular No. 1/96.) With reference to Regulations Nos. 41 and 4, published in the New Zealand Gazette, of 13th March, 1890, and 3rd May, 1894, respectively, it is notified for general information that, by arrangement with the Department of Justice, the expenses of all necessary witnesses for the prosecution in the above cases will be paid by the Police Department. Inspectors in charge of districts will therefore, in future, pay such claims, and include the vouchers in the ordinary Police expenditure. A. Hume, Commissioner of Police. Rewards. Constable L. McDonnell, No. 203, and J. Fry, No. 620, Auckland police, have been awarded £3 each for arresting stragglers from H.M.S. “Katoomba.” Constable C. Bonneb, No. 593, Queenstown police, has been awarded £2 2s. by the Telegraph Department for obtaining convictions against two boys for breaking insulators. Constable T. R. W. Philpotts, Reefton police, lias been awarded £6 by the Customs Department in recognition of his services in obtaining two convictions under “ The Beer Duty Act, 1880.” Sebgeant C. Rutledge, No. 72, and Constable P. Moore, No. 637, Lyttelton police, have been awarded 12s. 6d. and 10s. respectively by the Customs Department for securing the conviction of a seaman of the s.s. “ Mount Sirion ” for smuggling tobacco. Constable W. Mathieson, No. 477, Tapanui police, has been awarded £5 for services in securing convictions for slygrog selling in the Clutha District. (95/1602.)
