Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Aratapu. —Alfred Harwood is charged on warrant with stealing from the dwelling of William Miller, Totara North, Wairoa, on the sth instant, about 541 b. kauri-gum, value £1 ss. Offender is English, a sailor and mill-hand, nineteen years of age, sft. 6in. high, slight build, dark complexion, long features, no hair on face; dressed in white pants, dark coat, black cap, and has his swag in a sailor’s canvas bag.

Onehunga. —Josiah Robins reports that, on the 9th or 10th instant, his dwelling was broken into, and about £5 10s. worth of tobacco and £1 in cash stolen.

Onehunga. Herman Schmiedel, licensee, Royal Oak Hotel, Epsom, reports that, during the night of the 9th instant, his premises were broken into, and about 15s. in silver, two bottles of whiskey, and one bottle of brandy stolen.

Ngaruawahia.— Jane McVickar reports that, between the 25th and 29th ultimo, her dwelling was broken into, and eight £1 notes stolen.

Manaia. —Rhody Slattery, senior, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the beginning of July and the 31st ultimo, a five-chambered percussion cap revolver, hair trigger, ramrod attached to side, value £2; and about four dozen lady’s gilt neck-chains, value £4. Suspicion attached to Thomas Hannerman, who was recently in complainant’s employ. Description : Colonial, sixteen years of age, about sft. 7m. high, brown rough curly hair, florid complexion, stoutish build, active walk, mark of old cut on forehead, impediment at times in his speech, boasts of his ability at boxing ; dressed in a dark mixed-tweed suit, dark soft-tweed cap, and lace-up boots; may be carrying a bag swag with blanket tied on outside.

Ohingaiti. — Robert James Harden, labourer, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, on the 24th or 25th ultimo, a cheque for £2O, drawn by P. Moran on the Bank of New Zealand, Feilding, payable to A. Coulton or bearer; and about £1 in silver.

Palmerston North. —William Purler, porter, reports stolen from the Club Hotel, on the 6th instant, a dark-brown Inverness mackintosh coat, long cape, no sleeves, lined with broad-striped plaid; value, £2. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed Colonial, about twenty-six years of age, about sft. Bin. high, ruddy complexion, stout build, wore dark clothes. Suspect, whose identification is doubtful, offered the coat, or one similar to it, for sale to S. Abraham, pawnbroker, who declined to purchase it.

Foxton. —Kerenapu, now of Shannon, reports that, between the months of April and August last, her whare at Motoa, near Foxton, was broken into, and the following stolen: Two woollen blankets with blue borders, a blue-striped cotton rug, a blue table-cloth moth-eaten in centre, a new spade, three shark’s teeth, a bell, two greenstone earrings, two pieces of greenstone about 2in. long, and a bottle of port wine ; value, £4.

Pahiatua. —Edward Sullivan, hotelkeeper, reports stolen, on the 24th ultimo, a getleman’s gold ring, set with a large diamond in claw ; value, £ls.

Wellington. —Robert Barclay, licensee, Grosvenor Hotel, reports that, during the night of the 29th ultimo, his premises were broken into, and the following stolen : A ladies’ gold open-faced Waterbury watch, a gold bar brooch set with three diamonds, a ladies’ plain gold band ring, a gold-mounted hair-guard, two pink flannellette petticoats, five pairs of drawers, and five chemises ; value, £7.

Christchurch. —John Walker, Zetland Arms Hotel, Cashel Street, reports stolen from his bar-parlour, between the 28th and 31st ultimo, a double-barrelled, breech-loading, bottomaction, centre-fire fowling-piece, number unknown ; value, £7. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —Miss Lilia Burrows’s watch and chain have been returned through the post, addressed to her employer, Mrs. Grierson.

Sheffield.— -John William Ward and Jonathan Ward, labourers, Bleak House Farm, report that, on the 31st ultimo, their dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen': A blue-serge sac-coat.. “Ballantyne ” on tag, and vest to match, half worn ; a pair of light-tweed trousers, with bluish stripe, slightly worn by bicycle on right crutch; a soft white-felt hat, nearly new; a Canterbury watch, “W” scratched on back ; a silver Albert chain, small curb links, broken at bar, and mended with a flat ring, silver-mounted greenstone pendant attached ; a £1 note, and 10s. in silver : value, in all, £5 125., the property of John W. Ward. Also a dark-brown tweed sac-coat and vest, value, £2 ; a pair of light-coloured West of England tweed trousers, heavy material, nearly new, soiled by bicycle, value, £110s.; a pair of dark-tweed trousers, with light stripe, value 15s. (these clothes are about No. 6 size); a white-flowered silk handkerchief, value 25.; a £5 note, and a£l note; the property of Jonathan Ward. Suspicion attached to three young men (swaggers), who booked by train to Hornby on the above date. The only description obtainable is that they wore of medium height, about twenty years of age, and one of them wore a cap.

Lincoln. —lsaac Burdon, farmer, Burnham, reports that, on the 3rd instant, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver lever hunting watch, maker and number unknown, value £5; one gold and two silver rings, value £1 ; an old purse containing 15s. in silver, and a halfsovereign; a two-bladed pocket knife; and ten No. 12 cartridges loaded with No. 2 shot. Suspicion attached to George Maclaine and Frederick Blythe, alias John Henry Lewis, who were seen loitering about, and afterwards took tickets, one for Christchurch and the other for Islington. Geraldine. —Walter Johnson, charged with stealing £3 55., money of R. Searles, and a pair of boots, the property of G. Hammond, has been arrested by Constable R. Marsack, Christchurch police. Remanded to Geraldine, and sentenced to three months’ labour. Boots recovered.

Ashburton. —J. N. Hamer, Trust and Loan Agency, Christchurch, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Somerset Hotel, about the 10th ultimo, an open-faced silver lever watch, square face, “ Brockenhill” printed across dial, number unknown ; value, £4. Identifiable.

Oamaru. —James Patterson, gardener, Awamoa, reports that, on the Bth instant, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A black-cloth frock-coat, pockets in skirts, and one inside breast, black-cloth buttons; a vest and pair of trousers, same material as coat, size 5, half worn; a pair of dark-grey tweed trousers, partly worn, size 5, and a vest to match ; one double and two single-breasted vests, with pearl buttons ; a pair of drab-beaver trousers, half worn ; and an opossum rug, lined with red flannel, rent near one end : total value, £6.

Middlemarch. —George Heir, Barewood Reefs, reports stolen from his tent, about the 4th instant, a single greyishbrown blanket, with bluish stripes across ends; value, 14s. Suspicion attached to Bob Dixion, or Dickison, who stayed in the tent during the night of the above date. Description : A native of the colony, about nineteen years of age, about sft. Sin. high, dark hair and complexion, cast in one eye; dressed in a dark-tweed sac-suit, and dark-tweed cap. Has a black greyhound. Parents reside at Kaitangata.

Dunedin. —Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of A. W. Morris: Archibald Blue, junr., has been arrested for this offence by Constable C. R. Broberg, and committed for trial. Other articles stolen from complainant’s dwelling and not missed at the time were found in possession of the accused, but the three horn cups referred to in the abovequoted reference have not been recovered. It is, however, supposed that they have been destroyed, as it was shown that offender disposed of about as much silver as was in them.

Dunedin. —Mrs. Ann Everett reports stolen from her, at the Garrison Hall, on the 7th instant, an old black-leather purse, with steel clasp, containing £4 3s. 3d.
