Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Woodville. —Alfred Gower is charged on warrant with having, about the 17th July, 1895, stolen from the Oringi Station, near Woodville, seventeen head of cattle (recovered), value £SO, the property of Monckton Brothers. Offender is a colonial, a farmer, thirty-seven or thirty-eight years of age, sft. 3in. or 4in. high, stiff stoutish build, swaggering gait, smart active appearance, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache cut short, dark complexion, regular features ; dressed in a drab coat and trousers, and hard-hitter hat of the same colour ; wears leggings ; will most probably disguise ; well educated ; a good horseman ; very fond of racing. He entered the stolen cattle for sale in Abrahams and Williams’ saleyards, Palmerston North, on the above-men-tioned date, and they were disposed of on the following day. He left Woodville on the 24th of the above month, riding an inferior black mare, and will probably make for some isolated place until he can get away from the colony.

Whangaroa. —Hone Kiri is charged on warrant with having, about the month of April, 1894, at Te Mata, near Kaeo, stolen a pony, value £2, the property of William Preston, gum-digger, of Kerikeri. Since recovered. The offender is a Maori, about forty years of age, sft. 7in. or Sin. high, rather light complexion, several front teeth out. He can be identified by James Reynolds, gum-digger, of Kaeo, to whom he sold the pony during the above month.

(See Police Gazette, 1895, pages 123 and 131.) Kihikihi. —Stealing Nathaniel Harvey’s gelding (recovered) : A warrant has been issued by the Te Awamutu Bench for the arrest of the Maori, Tuhatau. He sold the animal to Charles Frederick Spooner, journalist, Te Aroha, on the 15th June last, and it has since been recovered and identified. The theft was committed on or about 10th June, not on the 17th as reported in the first instance.

Pukekohe. —Isaac Clark, Kanaka, reports stolen, between the Bth and 10th ultimo, a four-toothed ewe, pretty long wool, may have red-paint brand on one side ; value, Bs. 6d.

Rotorua. —John McKenzie, Ngangotaha, reports stolen, about the 9th instant, two cows, one five years old, black neck, black-and-white speckled body, branded with a heart on rump ; the other red, with white spot on flank, branded Z on rump, about 4 years old : value, £5 each. Also a blue-and-w'nite spotted steer, two years old, branded Z on rump ; value, £3. Maoris suspected.

Christchurch. —A young man, name unknown, is charged with having, on the 31st July last, stolen a brown saddlemare, aged, about 15 hands high, clipped all round except on legs, value £2O; also an English pigskin saddle, and a double-reined bridle, both in good condition, value £7; the property of Jabez Lukey. Offender is supposed colonial, about eighteen years of age, about sft. 6in. high, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face, respectable appearance ; carried a brown Gladstone bag. Identification doubtful. He hired the mare, saddle, and bridle for the express purpose of going to Opawa, but has not returned, and no trace of the property has been obtained. No warrant.

Winton. —William Evans, farmer, Otaperi Flat, reports stolen, about three months ago, three red and white heifer calves, branded EN on off rump, a slit in each ear; value, £1 ss. each.
