Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. James Berrill, licensee Bricklayers’ Arms Hotel, reports that during the night of the 30th ultimo his premises were broken into, and the following stolen: One £5 and ten £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, £9 in gold and silver, three door-keys on a ring, and two small keys in a brown-leather purse.

Auckland. —Henry Innes Nation, licensee Lake Hotel, Takapuna, reports that during the night of the 28th ultimo his bar was broken into, and £6 stolen.

Stratford. —Thomas Langton Lockton’s scarf-pin has been recovered, Bailey having confessed to stealing and secreting it. Offender is identical with Henry Bailey, alias Frank Morgan (vide Police Gazette, 1894, pages 24, 127, and 143), and is now waiting trial on other charges in Wanganui Gaol. He was going under the name of William Harrison when arrested.

Palmerston North. —John Anderson, road contractor, Pohangina, reports stolen from him in Palmerston North, on the 31st ultimo, one £5 and three £1 notes.

Danevirke. —Joseph Loney Kimbell, licensee Club Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 10th instant, a gold watch-chain, long plain links and bar in centre; attached was a gold locket, with diamond in centre, engraved on back, “Presented to J. L. Kimbell, as a token of esteem, by the members of the W.W.M.G., Oct. 9th, 1894 ”; and a silver sovereign-case, containing an imitation sovereign, engraved J.L.K.: value, £23. Members of the Mostyn-Dalziel Dramatic Company suspected.

Wellington. —Frederick Solomon, Cuba Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 30th ultimo, a solid silver biscuit-box, birds chased thereon, bevelled edges, lion’s mouth and ring at each side ; value, £5.

Wellington. —Walter Woodart, Oriental Hotel, reports stolen from him in Willis Street, on the 3rd instant, an American open-faced metal stop-watch, value £1 10s., a gold-plated double chain, long links, value £l, and four £1 notes.

Blenheim. —John Jones (probably a fictitious name) is charged on warrant with having, on the 16th or 17th ultimo, stolen from a tent at Upcot, Upper Awatere, a silver Rotherham hunting-watch, No. 74291, and 739 on outside of case; value, £6; the property of Michael Connelly. Offender is supposed English, about fifty years of age, medium build, dark complexion, beard cut short, first finger of left hand off; wore a blucher boot on the left foot, and a light boot on the right foot; thin, miserable appearance. Said to have gone towards Culverden.

Oamaru. —Donald Malcolm, labourer, reports stolen from Spring Hill Farm, between the 11th February last and 20th ultimo, a black-twill sac-coat, size 5, two outside hip-pockets and two outside breast ditto, dark lining, black-cloth buttons ; a vest of same material; a pair of blue-serge trousers with cross-pockets and hip-pocket; and a pair of Bedford cord trousers with cross pockets ; all nearly new : value, £3 10s. Suspicion attached to Thomas Ward, a labourer, twenty-one years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, dark moustache only. Living with his parents at Maheno.

Wyndham. —Alexander McDonald, farmer, reports stolen from him, in the Railway Hotel, during the night of the Ist January last, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 12735; makers, Wheeler and Son, London; value, £4. Suspicion attached to Thomas Burns, a professional jockey, about twenty-four years of age, sft. 4in. or sin. high, slight build, dark hair and complexion, brown eyes, dark moustache only. Went to Dunedin.
