Auckland. —James Graham is charged with disobeying the terms of his release under the First Offenders’ Probation Act. Description: Scotch, a cook and miner, forty-three years of age, sft. 9fin. high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, darkblue eyes, large nose, stout build, large mouth and chin, three upper front teeth out, ring on left middle finger. (See Police Gazette, 1894, page 151.) Well known in the Upper Waikato and Thames Districts. Is reported to have been seen at Ooolgardie, Western Australia.

Auckland. —Frederick Stewart Bates, charged with the abduction of Jane Fletcher, has been arrested by Constable A. F. Gordon, Napier police. Remanded to Auckland, and discharged.

Thames. —George Douglas, charged with having carnal knowledge of Lavinia Henrietta Bramley, has been arrested by Constable W. A. Bailey, Auckland police, and remanded to Paeroa.

Wanganui. —Christopher Odams is charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee, on the 3rd December last, of £1 55., money of his employer, William S. Dustin, baker. Offender is English, twenty-three years of age, sft. lOin. or llin. high, fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, slight fair moustache only, medium build, active appearance, goodlooking. He received the above sum from one of complainant’s customers, and failed to account for it. [Note. — This is inserted in lieu of notice appearing in Gazette of 6th February, 1895, page 17, in which offender’s name was erroneously quoted as Christopher Adams. ]

Marton. —William McDonald is charged on warrant with having, about the 24th February last, obtained the sum of £4 17s. 6d. from Robert Hunt, hotelkeeper, by means of a valueless cheque. Offender is identical with man of same name charged with a similar offence on Edward Ernest Aulsebrook, at Awatoto, Napier. (See Police Gazette, 1895, pages 28 and 53.)

Hawera. —Robert Marr is charged on warrant that he did, on the 11th February, 1895, obtain from Joseph Scott, commission agent, Hawera, the sum of £9 155., being a debt contracted without any reasonable or possible grounds or expectation of being able to pay the same as well as all his other debts, and that the said Robert Marr was thereafter, on the date above mentioned, adjudged a bankrupt. Offender is a horsebreaker or farmer, about thirty-eight years of age, about sft. 7in. high, slight build, round shoulders, rather bandy-legged, dark hair, fair moustache, medium mouth and nose, sour expression, about 11 stone weight; usually wears a grey-tweed coat and vest, strapped pants, soft-felt hat; was at one time farming in Canterbury. He left Hawera about fourteen days ago, and will no doubt endeavour to get away from the colony. He spoke of going to Calcutta with horses.

Napier. Archie Hughes is charged on warrant with having, on the 26th ultimo, forged and uttered to William Prebble, fruiterer, a cheque for £l7 10s., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Napier, and purporting to be signed by J. T. Holden, of Hampden, but which has been declared to be a forgery. Offender is supposed colonial, about twentytwo years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, medium build, rather small eyes, dark hair, clean-shaved except dark moustache; dressed in a dark-grey tweed sac-suit, rather faded, and hard black-felt hat; had the appearance of a station-hand. He left by 4.20 p.m. train on the same day.

Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay). William Rollo is charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee, on the Ist ultimo, of a saddle, value £6, the property of Alfred George Smith. Since recovered. Offender is about thirty-five years of age, sft. 7in. high, 9st. 71b. weight, fair complexion, light-brown hair, rather large nose, shaved except dark moustache tinged with grey; addicted to drink ; very talkative ; maybe wearing a grey-tweed coat and trousers and brown-felt hat; is well known to the racing community of Hawke’s Bay. He obtained the loan of the saddle for the purpose of proceeding to Gisborne, and on arrival there sold it to James Brown, of Makaraka, on the above date. He left for Napier the same day.

Martinborough. Hunter, and Michael Ryan are charged, on warrant issued by the Featherston Bench, with fraud on David Hope Johnston, licensee of the Club Hotel, Martinborough, between the 13th and 18th April, 1894. Lunny is supposed colonial, a bushman, thirty-five years of age, sft. lOin. high, stout build, freckled complexion, red hair side whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a dark-brown tweed suit. Sanders, colonial (German parentage), twenty-three years of age, sft. 6in. high, fair complexion, front teeth decayed ; his father is a professional music- teacher, and is said to reside at Masterton. Ryan, supposed colonial, twenty-seven years of age, sft. 7in. high, stout build, small dark moustache; wore a dark-tweed suit. No description can be given of Hunter. Offenders obtained board, lodging, and horse-hire to the value of £1 3s. 6d. each by falsely representing that they were going to work for a well-known bush contractor at Clifton Grove Station. Complainant heard that they were at Peatherston on the sth instant, and thereupon laid an information, and obtained a warrant for their arrest.

Wellington. —A man, name unknown, is charged with the theft, on the 4th instant, of a cheque for £3, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, the property of George W. Gardner, agent, Owen Street. Offender is supposed English, about thirty-two years of age, sft. 4in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark beard whiskers and moustache clipped short; wore a rough blue-serge suit, and hard black-felt hat; smart appearance; very good address. Can be identified. The cheque was lost by, or stolen from, Mr. Gardner on the above date, and during the same night offender obtained cash for it from W. Smith, boardinghouse - keeper, Willis Street. No warrant.

Wellington. —Walter Ugden, charged with forging the signature of C. P. Lys to a telegraphic money-order, has been arrested by Sergeant J. Cullen, Wanganui police, and remanded to Wellington.

Ashburton. James Trevurza is charged on warrant with fraud under “ The Chattels Transfer Act, 1889,” during the month of February last. Description : Supposed colonial, twenty-five or twenty-six years of age, sft. 9in. high, strong wiry build, thin face, dark-brown hair, light-brown moustache, may have grown whiskers and beard, peculiar eyes as if squinting; a teamster and horsebreaker; usually wears dark-tweed clothes and soft black-felt hat. Offender was a farm-contractor, and in November, 1894, gave Mr. David Thomas, merchant, of Ashburton, a lien over his horses and plant, but sold them during February following. He is now said to be driving a wagon in the North Island. This is a private prosecution.

Christchurch. —Mrs. J. Shand (probably a fictitious name) is charged on warrant with false pretences on Black, Beattie, and Co., drapers, on the 11th, 16th, and 20th ultimo. Description : Supposed English, about forty years of age, about sft. 2in. high, medium build, dark hair, clean complexion, full face, sharp chin, aquiline nose, brown eyes, small mouth, pleasant lady-like manner; dressed in a black skirt, black - and - white bodice, brown-plush dolman, and black bonnet with gold gimp trimming. She obtained goods to the value of £3 16s. 2d. by falsely representing that she was a visitor at Mr. John Dean’s, Lower Riccarton, and had been recommended to complainants.
