Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. Patrick O’Hern, gardener, Epsom, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 26th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 103S81, makers Stewart Dawson and Co., attached was a German-silver albert, small straight links, with a small camelia ornament and an American silver coin, about the size of a farthing, as pendants; value, £4 10s. Suspicion attached to a boy about eleven years of age, dressed in a dark jacket, knickerbockers, black stockings, strong boots (one worn a brown colour), and rather large white-straw hat with dirty band. Identification doubtful.

Auckland. —Stealing from James Reid’s dwelling: Philip Henry Moss Levy and William Francis Goodison have been arrested by Detective W. L. Chrystal for this offence, and the ring traced to their possession. Pencil-case and guard not recovered.

Breaking into and stealing from the store of Jeffery Hunter, Mangakahia: Peita Kavvau has been arrested for this offence by Constable F. A. Moore, Kamo police, and discharged for want of evidence. Offender has been committed for trial on another similar charge.

Warkworth (Auckland). —Captain William James Southgate reports stolen from his dwelling between about the 18th December, 1894, and 12th February, 1895, a box, Sin. by 4in , lined with white silk, containing a gold masonic jewel, blue stone with square and compass in centre, and “ William James Southgate, Rodney, E.C., N.Z., No. 1711, 20th May, 1886,” on back ; value, £ls ; also a gentleman’s gold ring with green stone, square and compass; value £5.

New Plymouth. —Stealing from the dwelling of Mrs. J. Petrie, Mangorei: William Morgan Jones has been arrested by Constable C. R. Seymour, Pukearuhe police, for this offence, and sentenced to six months’ labour. Stolen property except stamps and albums recovered. Suspicion is no longer attached to the youth, Ernest Warrick, referred to in the above-quoted reference.

Masterton. —Henry Rasmussen Neilson reports stolen from a bedroom at the Star Hotel, during the night of the 27th ultimo, eight £lO and twenty-three £1 notes. A doubtful case.

Martinborough. —George Todd, rabbiter, Te Awaiti Station, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 9th ultimo, a single-barrelled muzzle-loading gun, 101 b. of No. 2 shot, a box of caps, a pannikin, tin plate, and billy containing fat; value, £2 10s. 4d.

Wellington. —Miss F. Cochrane, barmaid, Queen’s Hotel, reports stolen on the 3rd or 4th ultimo, three chemises and three singlets—two pink, the other blue ; value, £l. Suspicion attached to a woman, name unknown, about twentysix years of age, medium height, stoutish build, sallow complexion, black hair; wore a fawn-coloured dress trimmed with dark silk, and (supposed) a white-straw hat. Suspect and a man occupied the room from which the articles were missed.

Ashburton. —Joseph Smith, Fairfield, reports that on the 27th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A lady’s gold albert guard, largo links, joined by small gold rings, gold key and American $5 piece attached, value £7 10s.; a£l note, and 3s. or 4s. in silver. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, thirty-five to forty years of age, sft. 9in. high, rather slim build, fair hair, blue or grey eyes, sandy beard and moustache; wore a very seedy grey-tweed suit, and round soft-felt hat; carried an old bagswag with grey blanket showing through. Supposed to have gone north.

Ashburton. —Edward Sydney Lowe, sheep-drover, Fairfield, reports that on the 27th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and two ladies’ gold rings, one set with a diamond, the other with four blue stones, stolen ; value, £l9. Suspicion attached to the man described in the preceding notice.

Ashburton.— J. H. Robinson, Fairfield, reports that on the 27th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and four £1 notes stolen. Suspicion attached to the man referred to in the two preceding notices.

Timaru. —Thomas Pooke, farmer, Kingsdown, reports that on the 22nd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 35635, maker Stamford, London, case well worn, value £3 10s., stolen. Suspicion attached to two young men, names unknown, who were loitering about tbe road. Description: First, about twenty-two years of age, sft. 6in. high, medium build, fair complexion, lightbrown hair, small fair moustache; dressed in a brown sacsuit, afid soft black-felt hat. Second, about twenty-one years of age, sft. sin. high, fresh complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache; wore an old serge suit and hard dark hat. They each carried a small bundle, and are supposed to have gone north. Identification doubtful.

Temuka. —William Budd, jun., Winchester, reports stolen from his hut on the 22nd ultimo a £lO note and 7s. in silver.

Hampden (Oamaru). —Robert G. Tubman, school-teacher, Moeraki, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 11th ultimo, a short Chesterfield overcoat, light colour, size (supposed) No. 6, partly worn, slight tear under the right sleeve ; value, £1 10s.

Dunedin. —Evans Pepperell, engine-driver, Jones Street, reports stolen from him at the circus on the 16th ultimo a

black morocco-leather purse, steel clasps, three compartments, containing three £1 notes (one marked “ 94 ” with blue pencil on the back), a half-sovereign, about £1 in silver, a watch-key, padlock-key, and latch-key.

Dunedin. —Samuel Henry Trevenna, saddler, Park Street, Kensington, reports that, on the 22nd ultimo, his dwelling was broken into, and a crocodile-skin purse, about 3in. by 2Jin., much worn, containing a £5 note, a juror’s pass for the Dunedin Exhibition, 1890, aud 10s. or 11s. in silver, stolen.

Waikouaiti. —George Sloan, farmer, Pleasant Valley, reports that, on the 15th ultimo, his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen: Two gentlemen’s gold rings—one massive, pick and shovel outside, “ G S ” engraved inside; the other having “Forget-me-not” engraved on a shield; a plain gold hoop earring; a white flowered silk handkerchief, and about 4s. in sixpenny and threepenny pieces: total value, £5 15s. Suspicion attached to four young men, names unknown, who were travelling together. Description : First, about twenty years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, fair complexion, light hair; dressed in a dark-brown tweed suit and soft black felt hat; carried a sugar-bag swag. Second, about twenty years of age, about sft. 7in. high, fresh complexion, fair hair; dressed in a grey-tweed suit and light soft-felt hat. Third, fifteen or sixteen years of age, about sft. high, dark-brown hair, swathy complexion ; wore a darktweed suit and round dark felt hat. Fourth, about nineteen years of age, about sft. siu high, dark hair and complexion; dressed in a dark coat, dirty-coloured moleskin trousers, and soft black felt hat. Suspects were searched at Palmerston South, but without effect, and are supposed to have gone towards Oamaru.

Waitati. —Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of James Green, Esq., M.H.R.: The stolen watch is now described as a gentleman’s silver Geneva open-faced (not hunting), and the number is 16593.

St. Bathan’s. —William Jones, rabbiter, Blackstone Hill Station, reports stolen from him at Hill’s Greek, on the 22nd ultimo, six or seven £1 notes. Suspicion attached to James Cotter, who was drinking with complainant at the time. Description : A native of Christchurch, a labourer, twentyeight years of age, sft. sin. high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, slight moustache, hazel eyes, cut-mark at back of neck ; dressed in a dark suit (trousers torn at seat), and small soft black-felt hat; carried a white swag. He left by coach for Alexandra, but may have gone to Clyde or Cromwell.
