Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Auckland. —William Fell is charged on warrant with having, on the 17th ultimo, stolen from the dwelling of Mary Eleanor Whitock, Karangahape Road, a shawl, value 10s. Identifiable. Offender is Scotch, a plumber, twenty-five years of age, sft. 3in. high, grey eyes, ruddy complexion, fair hair and moustache only ; dressed in a black-cloth coat, black-and-brown-check tweed trousers and vest, elastic-side boots, and soft light-brown felt hat (worn on back of head). He lodged at complainant’s for a few days, and the shawl was missed after his departure on the above date.

Auckland. —George Tibbett, grocer, Hobson Street, reports that on the 2nd or 3rd instant his shop was broken into, and £3 stolen. Entrance effected by the front-door key, which complainant’s shopman, John Nesbitt, alleges was stolen from his pocket, with the key of the safe, at complainant’s dwelling, Wellington Street.

Auckland. —W. and J. Peet, grocers, Karangahape Road, report that on the 4th or sth instant their shop was broken into through the back window, and about 4s. 6d. stolen.

Auckland. —Francis Pheasant, Matakohe, reports stolen from him, at Fowles’s drapery-shop, Queen Street, on the 25th ultimo, a chamois-leather purse with steel clasp, containing a sovereign, and a cheque for £2 10s., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, by E. Pheasant, and payable to complainant. Suspicion attached to two men, names un-

known, but who can be identified. Description: First twenty-five to thirty years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, medium build, reddish side-whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; dressed in a light-tweed suit and hard black hat. Second about the same age, about sft. 9in. high, cleanshaved except black moustache, dark complexion; wore a soft grey-felt hat with spotted puggaree.

(See Police Gazette, 1893, pages 54 and 64.) Rotorua.— Man, unknown, for stealing from Robert Henry McGough’s tent: Edward Kane, alias Fraser, has been arrested by Native Constable Hingawaka for this offence, and sentenced to three months’ labour by the Rotorua Bench.

Tauranga. —Stealing from the dwelling of Patrick Donovan, Te Puke: The coat and vest have been recovered from Te Mapu Tohiariki, a Native at Te Matai, who states he purchased them from a man supposed to be identical with John Stephenson, alias Sutherland, since committed for trial for C. A. Hickson’s larceny at Opotiki. (See Police Gazette, 1892, page 86.)

Helensville (Auckland).— During the night of the 16th ultimo the railway-office was broken into, and the mailbag, the property of the Postmaster-General, abstracted and thrown into the river, where it was found next morning. The bag had been cut open, and some books belonging to the Town Board placed therein, also pieces of coal, to sink it. The letters were placed in a basket on the office-floor, the remaining portion of the mail being left in the bag.

Wellington.— Kate Carden reports stolen from her, between the 7th and lltli ultimo, about £3OO in Bank of New Zealand notes—viz., one £SO, ten £2O, and the remainder in £lO, £5, and £1 ; a ladies’ gold open-faced watch, number unknown, engraved inside case “Presented to Kate Carden by the children of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School, 1874, value £8 ; a garnet brooch, set in gold, with one pendant; and a ladies’ silk umbrella, with white bow to end of handle : value of the two latter articles, £2. Suspicion attached to William McCarthy, alias Sullivan, Samuel Hill, and Thomas Riordan. The first two have been sentenced to two years’ labour for assault and robbery. Riordan has recently been discharged from gaol. (See “ Prisoners discharged,” also Police Gazette, 1893, page 7.) Complainant was knocking about the city and Petone in a drunken state during the time above mentioned, and cannot give an account of her movements. She is now at Mrs. Smith’s boarding-house, Molesworth Street.

Greytown North.— The Railway Commissioners report that on the 4th or sth instant the station was broken into, and the following stolen: A blue smooth pilot-cloth peajacket, size 7, body lined with strong cotton material, red-yellow-and-white pattern, sleeves with fine light-brown striped material; and six pairs of coloured moleskin trousers, “New Zealand Chief ” brand ; value £3 16s.

Otaki.— A youth, name unknown, is charged with having, on the 26tli ultimo, stolen an English double-cased lever watch, maker unknown ; white-metal chain (long twisted and short round links alternately), and a heart-shaped locket, glass or stone, black on one side and red on the other, bound with silver, attached; value £3 15s. 6d. ; the property of Tauhu Roera, Ohau. Offender is supposed colonial, about eighteen years of ago, about sft. 6in. high, slight build, fair hair and complexion; dressed in tweed clothes and black overcoat. He met complainant on the road, and asked him for his watch to see the time; it was handed to him, and they walked together to the railway-station, where the offender disappeared with it. Complainant is half-witted, but there seems to be no doubt as to the truth of the statement. Offender is said to have gone to Foxton, and to be working at a flax-mill there. No warrant.

Feilding. —Stealing Harry Harvey’s watch, &c. : Otto Hasste, fifteen years of age, has been arrested for this offence by Constable J. J. Tuohy, Feilding Police, and discharged on account of his youth and previous good character. Property recovered. r J

Taradale (Napier). — Sophia Harris, servant, Taradalc Hotel, reports stolen from a washhouse, on the 30th ultimo, two ladies’ gold rings, one set with tivo rubies and diamond

in centre, the other has a horse-shoe stamped on it, and has been set with diamonds and two rubies, but one of the latter and most of the former are missing ; value £5.

Hastings. —Hariata Hori, Pakipaki, reports stolen from a bedroom at the Albert Hotel, Hastings, on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, a dark-brown-fur boa, of unusual length ; value £3.

Christchurch. —Charles Stockes reports lost or stolen from him, while drunk in the city, on the 2nd or 3rd instant, a new white-leather pocket-book, about 6in. by 4in., containing a steerage ticket per s.s. “ Wakatipu,” Lyttelton to Sydney, and one tbence to England by the Orient steamer “ Cuzco ” ; value of tickets, £2l. Complainant is at Hunter’s restaurant, Manchester street.

Coalgate. —Hugh Patterson, labourer, Annat, report that on the 20th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and four £1 notes (one torn in centre) and £1 in silver stolen.

Dunedin. —Mrs. M. E. Gill, milliner, Princes Street, reports that, on the 31st ultimo or Ist instant, her shop was broken into, and a ladies’ small gold ring, set with a diamond and three or four rubies, value £1 155., stolen.

Gore. —William Campion is charged on warrant with having, on the 15th ultimo, stolen a box, containing a pair of sheets, value £1 4s. Gd., the property of Thomas Port. Offender is English, a labourer, thirty years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, dark complexion, black moustache only; dressed in dark clothes. He left Gore on the above date, supposed for Dunedin, taking the box with him, and was accompanied by complainant’s wife, Mary Ann Port, and a boy seven years of age, an inmate of the Caversham Industrial School. The boy, if found, is to be returned to the school.

Denniston. —Alfred John Letfort, hairdresser, reports stolen from his shop, on the 27th or 28th ultimo, two German hollow-ground razors, marked “ Welman Antona,” one has a crack in the blade ; and a hair-clipper, Brown and Sharp’s patent; value £2 ss.
