Stolen on the 12th or 13th ultimo, from the shop of John Rendell, draper, Grey Street, Auckland, a ladies’ grey-cloth jacket, embroidered on sleeves and front, high shoulders; value 18s. 6d.; also a child’s ulster, white- and red-striped, 21in.; value Bs. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Kaiapoi-twced trousers, a brown summer coat, three white shirts (two of them new), four linen collars, two silk handkerchiefs, one blue and white striped, the other maroon, and two neckties, one blue, the other yellow and black; value £8; the property of W. G. Leigh. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Patrick Morrison, about twenty years of age, about sft. 6in. high, fair hair, none on face ; wearing the dress of a fireman, of which he has the appearance. Suspect arrived in a gang of unemployed from Wellington, and is ' supposed to have returned there on the day after the robbery.

Stolen on the 13th or 14th ultimo, from Rayne’s Kaihu Hotel, Dargaville, Auckland District, a black macintosh with black-cloth buttons, one of them recently put on, “ CB ” in ink under collar and flap of one pocket; value £2 10s.; the property of Charles Burton, insurance agent, Ponsonby.

Also, a rusty-brown mackintosh, fine-cord pattern, ventilators under arms, black-bone buttons; value £1 10s.; the property of Tom Teesing, watchmaker, Victoria Street, Auckland. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th or 21st May last, from Thompson’s Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, three gold shirt-studs and a pair of gold solitaires, “ DMK ” stamped on back; value £2; the property of Donald McKenzie, blacksmith, Lane’s stables, Sydney Street, Wellington. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 12th and 18th May last, from the whare of Samuel Donnelly, Huia Gumfields, Whangaroa, Auckland District, a brown rug, with blue stripe running lengthways, blue binding, about half-worn; a pair of old dark-tweed trousers, cut across below left knee ; a small billy, a towel, and two reels of cotton ; value 10s. Identifiable. Stolen during complainant’s absence.

Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the 4th ultimo the whare of Walter Doorly, Paheke, near Hokianga, was broken into, and the following stolen : A cheque for £25 on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, No. A 6726, drawn by G. G. Menzies, in complainant’s favour, and marked “ Road Accountone ditto for £3 on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, drawn by Patterson, of Kaikohe, and payable to “ Gumnine sovereigns, a half-sovereign, a £5 and twenty £1 notes, and a sack containing about 1501 b. kauri-gum. First-named cheque and sack identifiable. Maoris, camped close by, suspected.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the shop-door of Edward Chrisp, storekeeper, Gladstone Road, Gisborne, a ladies’ blue-silk waterproof ulster, striped with white, 60in. long; value 18s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the shop-door of Henry Lewis, storekeeper, Gladstone Road, Gisborne, about twelve yards of Rob Roy tartan-plaid ; value £1 10s.

James Robinson (may be a fictitious name) is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with having, on the 16th ultimo, stolen from the Old Times Restaurant, Princes Street, Dunedin, a silver watch (recovered), value £4 ; and a pair of dark-tweed trousers and vest, value £1 10s.; the property of Sydney German. Identifiable. Description: A Londoner, a sailor or fireman, about twenty-three years of age, sft. 4in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion, little or no hair on face, scar under left eye ; wore light-tweed suit and soft white-felt hat. Offender pledged the watch at Solomon’s pawn-office, George Street, on the same day.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from a dwelling in Vincent Street, Auckland, a silver brooch, 2Jin. diameter; value 155.; the property of Arthur Robinson. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the Commercial Hotel, High Street, Auckland, a dark-brown check-tweed overcoat with cape, dark bone-buttons, nearly new; value £3 ; the property of Alfred John Kidd, Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the person of Elizabeth Jane Lowe, during an auction sale in Howe Street, Auckland, a cheque for £5 Bs. 4d. (recovered), and an old brown-leather purse. The cheque was presented at Louis Levy’s second-hand shop, Hobson Street, on the same date, by a middle-aged female of respectable appearance, dark complexion, round features, and dressed in dark clothes, who purchased articles to the value of 145., and received the balance in change.

Between 10.15 p.m. on the 20tli and 6.30 a.m. on the 21st ultimo, the shop of William Wright, Otaki, Wellington, was broken into, *and a pair of men’s new balmoral boots, size §, value 19s. 6d., stolen. One of the boots was subsequently found in a tank at the rear of the Telegraph Hotel.

Between the 2nd and 9th ultimo an unoccupied hut at Anderson’s Park, near Wyndham, Southland, the property of Peter John Peterson, was entered by means of a duplicate key, and the following stolen : Two axes, one of them nearly new, with an iron wedge driven into the handle ; an old spade ; a new spade, its handle repaired with a nail ; three or four rolls of bacon ; two pairs of double blankets, one white, the other blue; an old opossum rug; two grey-woollen bedquilts, one torn in the centre ; and a coverlet, red pattern ; value about £4. Suspicion attached to John Burns, a farmer, living near the hut.

Stolen on the 19th or 20th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Carterton, a silver lever openfaced watch, very large size, with gold-plated albert, oval links, and plain silver ring attached ; value £3 13s. ; the property of Ereik Person. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from outside the shop of Thomas Small, draper, Market Street, Blenheim, a new brown-tweed overcoat, size 4, two side-pockets, a breastpocket on left side, and one inside ; value £2. Identifiable.

Between the 14th May last and the 2nd ultimo an unoccupied wliare at the Puhipuhi State Forest, near Hukerenui, Auckland District, was wilfully damaged by breaking nine panes of glass, and a spade and two garden-hoes, value Bs. 6d., stolen. The property of the Crown Lands Department. Hoes identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from outside the shop of J. M. Cullen, draper, Upper Symonds Street, Auckland, a Crimean shirt, dark and light-grey stripes, and a white- and blue-striped cotton ditto, turned-down collars on both 1 value, 12s. 3d.

Between 10 p.m. on the 11th and 7 a.m on the 12th ultimo, the shop of Henry Franklin, Queen Street, Waimate, Canterbury, was broken into, and about 161 b. of tobacco, Ruby-twist and Juno, stolen. Entry gained by breaking a back window and slipping the catch. (This is inserted to correct the notice in last Gazette, page 108, in which complainant’s address was given as Oamaru.)

Stolen between the 15th and 26th May last, from the shop of Edward McDermott, general dealer, corner of Durham and Tuam Streets, Christchurch, a ladies’ silver geneva hunting-watch, No. 22270, maker unknown; identifiable. Suspicion attached to Bertha Whitmarsh, who was in complainant’s employment. Description: Supposed a native of the colony, about twenty-three years of age, about sft. sin high, medium build, fair complexion, blue eyes, short features, very light brown hair ; dressed in a lightcoloured jacket, dark skirt, and white straw hat; believed to be still in Christchurch. Her parents reside in Timaru.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the shop of William Preston, draper, Karanghape Road, Auckland, thirteen pairs mens’ merino socks, ten brown, two navy-blue, and one red; value 9s. Also a brown cloth petticoat, three rows of brown braid round bottom ; value 2s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the dwelling of Priscilla Wiseman, prostitute, Moray Place, Dunedin, a silver necklet, cable pattern, with square silver locket attached ; value £3 12s. Identifiable. Suspicion attaches to two men. Description : First known as “ Bill,” supposed colonial, a labourer and shearer, about thirty years of age, sft. llin. high, stout build, fair complexion, fair hair, very heavy fair moustache only; dressed in a dark-tweed suit. Second, name unknown, supposed colonial, a painter, about twentytwo years of age, sft. sin. high, dark complexion, very small dark moustache only, slender build; wore a dark-tweed suit. Both aro supposed to be still in Dunedin, but expressed their intention to complainant of returning to Oamaru, where they are well known, in a few days’ time.

Stolen between the 14th and 20tli ultimo, from the Northeast Valley Hotel, Dunedin, the property of Sarah Sinclair, licensee, an oval-shaped gold brooch, a seven-pointed star with a ruby surrounded by six diamonds in centre, and a gold neck-chain; value £6. Also, the property of Kate Doogan, an oval-sliaped silver locket with silver chain, small flat links, attached ; a pair of silver earrings, drop and fringe pattern ; and a two-bladed penknife with plain bone handle ; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who slept in the hotel on the 16th and 17tli ultimo. Description : Twenty-eight years of age, sft. 6in. high, slight build, fair hair, weak blue eyes, sallow complexion, oval face; wore a blue cloth monkey-jacket, elasticside boots, soft brown-felt hat. Suspicion attached to Matau Pirika, who was seen in the room at 2 a.m. Description; A Maori, about thirty years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, full face, small dark moustache; dressed in grey clothes. Still in Wellington, and is well known at Masterton.

Stolen between 11 and 12 p.m. on the 24th ultimo, from the person of William Whitmarsh, while drunk in Wellington, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Rotherham, No. 61537; value £6.
