At 3.10 a.m. on the 16th ultimo the bootmaker’s shop of A. J. Cooper, Gisborne, was discovered on fire. The gasmeter, which was turned off at 11 p.m. on the previous night, was found turned on, the gas-pipe cut, and the escaping gas on fire. At an inquest held on the 23rd ultimo, before James Booth, Esq., Resident Magistrate and Coroner, to inquire as to the cause of the fire, a verdict of incendiarism was returned against some person or persons unknown.
