Missing Friends.

Special inquiry is requested to be made for Thomas Hudson, an important witness in the case of Regina v. Joseph William Francis, larceny, for trial at the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, to be held at Timaru on the 20th August next. Description: English, a waiter, &c., twentytwo years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair, no hair on face, straight legs, upright carriage, small active appearance ; dressed in dark sac-coat and vest, brown-tweed trousers, and hard black round felt hat. He was bound over to appear at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Timaru, to give evidence in this case, but he did not attend, and the case has been adjourned until the 20th August next, in order to secure his attendance. It is said that he was recently seen in Dunedin, but the police there have been unable to find him. If he cannot be found, and satisfactory evidence that he has left the colony were forthcoming, his depositions taken at the Resident Magistrate’s Court would then be accepted. Any information obtained respecting him to be forwarded without delay to the Inspector of Police, Oamaru.

Information is requested respecting Alexander Joss, a native of Scotland, a saddler, forty-five years of age, sft. 3in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, bald, scar on one of eyebrows, has the habit of biting his beard ; may be wearing a dark-tweed sac-suit and hard blaclc-felt hat. Ho was last heard of on the 29th ultimo, at the Metropolitan Hotel, Christchurch, where he left his portmanteau and coat. Fears for his safety are entertained, as he is supposed to be weak-minded, and sometimes wanders about in an aimless way. If found, please inform the Inspector of Police, Dunedin, of his whereabouts by telegram.

Information is requested respecting John Dence, a native of England, twenty-six years of age, 6ft. lin. high, dark complexion, dark moustache and side whiskers, chin shaved, walks on his toes; when last seen wore blue sac-coat, liglittweed trousers and vest, and fawn-coloured hard hat. He left Lyttelton on the sth January last by the steamer “ Penguin ” for Wellington, with the intention of obtaining employment on the Manawatu Railway-line. He is said to be well known in the Hawke’s Bay and Wellington Districts. Letters from his father have recently been received by Mr. W. D. Robinson, of Christchurch, for him.

Information is requested respecting William Durie, a native of Scotland, a maltster and storeman, forty-five years of age, about 6ft. Sin high, stout build, broad shoulders, blue eyes, red hair beard whiskers and moustache, peculiar walk owing to his feet being tender ; wore light-tweed coat, darktweed trousers and vest, and soft black-felt hat. He was heard of at Marton in January last. He is well known in Dunedin. He is inquired for at the instance of his wife and child, who are destitute at Wellington.

Information is requested respecting Elizabeth Watson, a spinster, who was last heard of on the 18th September, 1873, at the White Horse Hotel, George Street, Dunedin ; and of William Rudolph Ferdinand Gerharclt, a seaman, who was last heard of on the 24tli December, 1879, at the Young Men’s Christian Association, Dunedin.

Information is requested respecting Zachariah Sayers, late a traveller in South Australia for Wertheim and Co., sewingmachine importers, thirty-nine years of age, sft. 9in. high, dark complexion, full dark beard, &c. He was in Sydney about eighteen months ago, and it is said was then in poor circumstances. Pie is now said to be in this colony. He left the Naseby District in January last, and was seen going through Danzie’s Pass. He was a Volunteer at Naseby, and left the county without delivering up his arms and accoutrements; and he is now

inquired for so that he may be proceeded against for not having done so.

Information is requested respecting John Calnan, a native of Ireland, a station-hand and carpenter, thirty-three years of age, sft. 6in. high, florid complexion, brown hair whiskers and moustache, chin usually shaved; has been in the army. He left the Naseby District in December last for the shearing at Lauder Station, and has not since been heard of. He was a Volunteer at Naseby, and left the county without delivering up his arms and accoutrements, and ho is now inquired for so that he may be proceeded against for not having done so.

Information is requested respecting Mary Cecila Counsel, who is suspected of being engaged in baby-farming. About the 20th November last she obtained, by advertisement, from a Mrs. Dykins, St. Clair, near Dunedin, twin-children, named Edith and Ethel Winchester, born on the sth October last, saying that she wanted them for a Mrs. McGregor, of Wellington or Auckland. She received £l4 for the maintenance of the children. About two months after she brought the child Edith back to Mrs. Dykins in a delicate state of health, and the child died in a few days after. She said she left the child Ethel with Mrs. McGregor. On the 19th February last, when questioned by the Dunedin Police, she refused to give them Mrs. McGregor’s address, but promised to produce the child in ten days, but instead of doing so absconded. There is no record of the death of the child Ethel Winchester in the office of the Registrar of Deaths, Dunedin. It is requested that inquiries be made for the child, and that the records at the offices of the Registrars of Deaths be searched. It is absolutely necessary to obtain the woman Counsel’s statement as to the manner in which she has disposed of the child.
