Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Thomas Mulvaney is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with breaking into the dwelling of Bridget Mooney, Swanston Street, Auckland, on the 4th ultimo, and stealing a ladies’ grey ulster, since recovered. Description : Irish, a gum-digger, between fifty and fifty-five years of age, sft. 7,Jin. high, swarthy complexion, hazel eyes, red hair, large mouth, broad chin, scar on right cheek and on right eyebrow, blue dot over left eye, gunshot wound at left heel, marks of corporal punishment on back, partly bald; wore old shabby grey clothes. He is an old offender. (See Police Gazette , 1887, page 122.) He is supposed to have gone to the gumfields.

Edward John St. Edmonds is charged, on warrant issued by the Wanganui Bench, with stealing, on the 17th or 18th ultimo, in the St. John Hotel, Wanganui, a £1 note, two sovereigns, and ss. in silver; the property of Edward Hackett. Description : English, about twenty-six or twentyeight years of age, about sft. 4in. high, slight build, round features, brown hair, small sandy brown moustache and small side whiskers, otherwise clean-shaved, delicate appearance, very white hands ; said he was suffering from heart disease ; wore reddish-coloured-tweed pa.get-coat, light-tweed trousers, and liglit-tweed cap with peak of same material, sometimes wears a pepper-and-salt-coloured overcoat; carries a walking-stick. He had been staying at the hotel, but he left there on the 18$h ultimo, and it is not known where he has gone. He had previously stayed at several hotels in Wanganui, and left them without paying for his board and lodging.

Charles Rivers Allpress is charged, on warrant issued at Melbourne, with stealing £7,000 from the Commercial Bank,.Melbourne, on the 25th ultimo, while an officer of the bank.’ Description: Twenty-nine years of age, sft. lOin. high, olive complexion, thin aquiline nose, dark hair, and moustache only. A reward of £250 is offered for his arrest, and a similar amount for the recovery of the stolen money. He may try to escape by steamer calling at Rio de Janeiro or San Francisco. It is requested that a careful watch be kept for him.

William Judd is charged, on warrant issued by the Palmerston North Bench, with stealing, on the 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Joseph Henry Devlin, Palmerston North, a pair of light-coloured-tweed trousers, about size 5, made by Nicholls and Remington, Wanganui, whose names may be on the buttons, value £1 155.; and a straw hat, value 3s. 6d. Identifiable. Description: English, a labourer, about nineteen or twenty years of age, about sft. 4in. or sin. high, slight build, sallow complexion, little if any hair on face; supposed to be wearing the stolen trousers and hat. He was seen on the 25th ultimo at a railway-station between Woodville and Napier.

Stolen on the 4th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Family Hotel, Foxton, a ladies’ gold ring, engraved, three rubies in claw-setting, one of the claws broken off, value £1; and a gentleman’s gold ring with engraving thereon, value £2 10s.; the property of Elizabeth Hunter. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Lazarus, who is employed as cook in the hotel. Description: English, about forty years of ago, sft. 2in. high, medium build, fair complexion, long features, large chin, brown eyes, and light-brown hair.

Stolen on the 24th December last, from off the counter in the draper’s shop of Miss Leatham, Victoria Street, Auckland, an oval 18-carat gold locket, 2Jin. long, flowered on one side and plain on the other ; the property of Ellen Radcliffe ; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the stli instant, from a casli-box in the office of H. W. Preston, Lambton Quay, Wellington, five £1 notes.

Between 11.30 p.m. on the 23rd and 5.30 a.m. on the 24tli ultimo the North Otago Hotel, Oamaru, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen : Two old silver lever hunting-watches, out of repair, makers’ names and numbers not known ; a brass hunting Geneva watch, maker’s name and number not known ; a bottle of whiskey, a bottle

of gin, and a bottle of brandy; the property of Peter Dooley; value £1 10s. Watches supposed identifiable. Also a nearly-new pair of brown-moleskin trousers, size 4; and 9s. in silver; the property of Charles Murphy.

On the 4th ultimo the dwelling of John McDonald, Porokaiaia, near Foxton, was broken into, and £2 in threepenny and sixpenny pieces stolen.

On the 26tli ultimo a dwelling at Clinton was broken into, and the following stolen: A black-leather purse, about 3in. long, four compartments, and elastic band, containing two £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, 7s. in silver, four penny stamps, a letter, and a receipted account from James Wilson, butcher, Tapanui, the property of Henry Reid ; and a black-leather purse with two compartments and iron clasps, containing three £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and Bs. in silver, the property of James Curran. Purses, receipt, and letter identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from an office on the Queen’s Wharf, Wellington, a nearly-near hand-knitted blue woollen guernsey; the property of Matthias Segrief; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between May last and the 31st ultimo, from the Star Hotel, Lambton Q ua y> Wellington, a nearly-new large black Gladstone bag with white-calico lining, “ William Robert Lane” written in ink on inside, containing a fivechambered revolver ; the property of William Robert Lane ; value £4. Bag identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the shop-window of William Hunt, Cuba Street, Wellington, three white-damask table-cloths, marked 2s. lid. in pencil; value Bs. 9d. Identifiable by pencil-marks.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of Ah Ivin, Mansfield Street, Wellington, a red blanket; value 16s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the Junction Hotel, Oamaru, about £1 in silver, and a gallon demijohn with wicker-work considerably worn, containing about half a gallon of rum; value 135.; the property of Alexander C. Patterson.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd October last, from the person of David Alexander, in the Royal Hotel, Ashburton, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Meredew, No. 23165, A on inside of case ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 3rd and 23rd ultimo, from the store of William Wilkinson, Castle Street, Dunedin, a medium-sized bicycle lamp, “ The Monster Lucass Patent ” stamped on front, value 10s.; and a large bicycle lamp, “ The King of the Road, T.B.L.W. ” stamped on front, value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 28tli ultimo, from the Timaru Herald office, Timaru, a steel-grey waterproof overcoat, not much worn, 54in. long, two pockets, and dark-bone buttons, lower button off ; the property of Andrew Christie Lawrence ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the store of Hugh Anderson, Matakolie, Kaipara, about lewt. of kauri-gum; value £2. Some of the pieces identifiable. Maoris suspected.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the person of Mary Smyth, at an auction-sale in Symonds Street, Auckland, a white-cambric handkerchief, value Is. 6d., and a darkleather pocketbook with elastic band, containing three £1 notes, a half-sovereign, ss. sd. in silver and copper, and several bills for small amounts. Stolen on the 80th ultimo, from the person of Jonas Hartley, in the Clyde Hotel, Hampden, Otago, a silver lover Waltham hunting-watch, No. 39211, considerably worn; value £4. Identifiable.
