Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

(Sec Police Gazette, 1887, page 171, and 1888, page 113.) Daniel Tidey, charged on warrant with stealing money, &c., at Swanson, the property of James Patterson Sinclair, has been arrested by Constable John Ryan, Danevirke Police, and remanded to Auckland.

cheque at Beafch and Co.’s draper’s shop, Nelson, is charged, on warrant issued by the Westport Bench, with this offence. He was at Nelson in April last.

John Bicknell is charged, on warrant issued by the Hawera Bench, with the larceny, as a copartner, on the 22nd ultimo, at Stratford, of the sum of £6O 13s. 6J. ; the property of Peter Hunter and Richard Rogers. Description : A native of England, a labourer, about thirty-eight years of age, about sft. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, fair beard whiskers and moustache inclined to red, beard worn rather long for a man of his size ; dressed in grey-tweed suit, black soft-felt hat, and lace-up boots. He left Stratford by train on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, and is supposed to have gone to Halcombe or Rangitikei, where he is well known. He was a partner of complainant’s in a contract for fencing land at Stratford for a Mr. Manson, and on completing the work received a cheque for the sum of £66 13s. 6d., being the balance of the amount due. He cashed the cheque on the 19th ultimo, and has failed to divide the amount with complainants. He passed through Feilding on the 22nd ultimo in the 4.20 p.m. train, supposed for Wellington.

Charles Warren and Frederick Padgham are charged, on warrant issued by the Marton Bench, with stealing, on the 31st ultimo, from the fowlhouse of Emma Ann Stubbs, Turakina, two hens and a rooster, value 10s., since recovered. Description: Warren is fifty years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, fresh complexion, pockpitted, brown beard whiskers and moustache, lobe of both ears cut off; dressed in brown-tweed coat, moleskin trousers, and dark-tweed liat. Padgham is forty years of age, sft. Tin. high, medium build, dark complexion, very full dark-brown eyes, large nose (broken), large nostrils, dark-brown whiskers and moustache; wore dark-brown tweed coat (collar generally turned up), moleskin trousers, and black-felt hat; usually employed as a cook. He left Turakina on the Ist instant for Wanganui on foot.

Stolen between the 4th ultimo and the 9th instant, from St. Mark’s Parsonage, Wellington, a copper boiler, value £1 ss; two tin teapots, value 3s. each ; and two earthenware jugs, value Is. each; the property of the Rev. Richard Coffey.

Stolen on the 7th or Bth instant, from Polhill Gully, Wellington, three chisel and diamond-pointed picks with handles, “ Brogden ” marked on iron of one, WB on iron of another, and WB on the handle of the third, value 10s.; a shovel, the brand on each side of the handle near the blade has been cut out, value 55.; and a chisel and diamond-pointed crowbar, sft. long, value 7s ; the property of Samuel Ash. Identifiable except crowbar.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from a bread-cart in the entrance to Godber’s bakery-yard, Cuba Street, Wellington, a white shirt, buttons at back, “ James Meston” written on breast; a grey Crimean shirt with JM on breast, a white cotton singlet, a pair of merino drawers, two white-linen collars turned down in front, marked “ James Meston,” and a white-linen handkerchief ; the property of James Meston; value 9s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th or 31st ultimo, from Hanson Street, Wellington, a copper boiler, 21in. in diameter and 24in. deep, tar had been recently boiled in it; the property of George Henry Baylis ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, on board the barque “ G. M. Tucker,” at Greymouth, a gold hunting Waltham watch, a dent in corner of case, value £3 15s. ; and a silver Waltham hunting-watch with three small marks on inside of case, value £1; the property of John Smith. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to David Jacobs, a Jew, nineteen or twenty years of age, sft. 7in. high, dark brown-hair, no hair on face, large dark eyes, large prominent nose ; dressed in blue-serge jacket and vest with New Zealand Shipping Company’s silver buttons, greenish trousers with white stripes, and a sailor’s cap with peak.

Supposed stolen about the end of May, 1887, from oil a horse at Feilding, a saddle with hogskin seat, large kneepads, near pad worn, a slit in flaps for surcingle, new girth; a very strong hand-sewn single-rein bridle, made similar to a head-stall, steel bit with a small ring in centre, reins fastened to bit with small spring hooks instead of buckles ; the property of Henry Ashworth ; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on or about the 21st April last, from the railwaystation, Walton, Waikato, a parcel containing a ladies’ velvet dress; the property of Charles N. Murray ; value £5.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from the railwaystation, Eltham, Taranaki District, a small jar covered with wickerwork, containing 2 gallons of whiskey; the property of Arnold Berg; value £2 18s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

On the morning of the 10tli instant the coffee-stall of John Ross, Victo.ua Street, Wellington, was broken open, and the following stolen : A nearly-new wickerwork-basket, 2ft. long, ISin. wide, and llin. deep, containing seven white-handled dessert-knives, seven metal forks, nine metal teaspoons, three white teacups with red band, a saucer, two plates, a darkbrown teapot (holds about three pints), a large loaf of bread, a packet of sugar, some butter, and saveloys ; value £l. Identifiable except eatables.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from off a horse at Masterton, two new bridle-reins and a rather old and worn breast-plate with fancy-work down the shoulder-piece and breast-piece ; the property of George Bannister ; value £1 ss. Breast-plate identifiable ; identification of reins doubtful.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the cabin of the steam-launch “ Picton,” at Picton, a light-coloured overcoat, “ Taylor, Little Bourke Street, Melbourne,” marked on inside of collar ; a Chinese fancy cabinet-box, 14in. x Bin., varnished black, with filigree-work interspersed with golden flowers, containing title-deeds of property in Germany ; an engineer’s certificate, with indentures, from Woolwich Dockyard ; a certificate as chief engineer of the refrigerating department of the steamer “ Doric,” a colonial certificate of engineering, an engineer’s discharge from the steamer “ Omapere,” a Seamen’s Union book, an 18-carat gold snakering, with diamonds for eyes, “ Charles Delberg” engraved on inside ; a common 9-carat gold ring, and two nuggets of Kimberley gold, one oval and the other like a Chinese shoe ; the property of Charles Delberg ; value £l9. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the porch of the schoolhouse at Waikaia, a boys’ grey-tweed waterproof-overcoat, with yellow-striped blue-tweed lining; the property of Thomas Taylor ; value £l. Identifiable.

Lost or stolen between the 24th and 27th ultimo, ot Blueskin, a ladies’ silver Geneva hunting-watch, case flowered, makers J. and T. Young, Dunedin, No. 23726, attached was a silver chain, very small-link pattern; the property of Delia Hastings ; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th instant, at Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, a nearly-new bullock-hide saddle, very soft high knee-pads, seat torn at back and fastened with a tack, tree easily felt through seat, new stirrup-leathers, rusty square stirrup-irons, and blue-and-white-cotton girth, value £2 10s.; and a single-rein bridle, with black forehead-band and rusty bit, value 45.; the property of James G. Watson. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a case in the Museum, Wellington, four photographs of Egyptian mummies taken on white paper, three in full length with arms crossed on breast, the fourth lying on one side in order to show the effect of defective embalming.
