Missing Friends.

Information is requested respecting Edward James Ellis, a native of England, a labourer and general station-hand, thirty-four years of age, sft. llin. high, rather stout build, square shoulders, red face, hazel eyes, brown hair, cleanshaved except brown moustache. He was shearing at Morven Hills Station, near Cromwell, in 1887. He is inquired for in order to compel him to pay arrears due for the support of his two children in the Burnham Industrial School. On the 16th April last £l2 16s. was owing.

Special inquiry is requested to be made for ' Thomas Norton, a native of Ireland, a labourer, about thirty-two years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, medium build, dark complexion, black hair and moustache; wore dirty grey-tweed suit and soft-felt hat. He is the principal witness in the case of the Queen v. Doro and Morgan, robbery with violence, and it is important that his whereabouts should be ascertained, so that his attendance may be insured at the trial. He left Oamaru on the 2nd ultimo.

William Jamieson is missing from near Gore since the 3rd April last, and it is feared has been drowned in the Mataura River, as he was last seen going towards the river, and his coat and hat were subsequently found on the riverbank. Description : A native of Scotland, a ploughman and labourer, twenty-eight years of age, about] 6ft. high, stout build, square shoulders, fresh complexion, one eye blue and the other black and blue, fair hair, clean-shaved except small dark moustache; dressed in dark - check tweed trousers and vest, and elastic-side boots with toe-caps; fond of drink. His mother resides with a Mr. Henderson, at Corner Bush, Merton, Dunedin District.

Information is requested respecting Patrick Begley, a native of the North of Ireland, a labourer, thirty years of age, sft. high, stout build, sandy complexion, brown hair, mark of cut between nose and forehead. He was found guilty of larceny at the Supreme Court, Oamaru, on the 6th September last, and released on probation for six months, and ordered to pay ss. per week to the Probation Officer at Oamaru towards the cost of the prosecution, but he has failed to pay the amount, and now owes the sum of £3 10s., and has also failed to report himself. He was seen about eight weeks ago at St. Andrew, and is supposed to have gone towards Timaru. If found, please inform the Inspector of Police, Oamaru, of his whereabouts.

Information is requested respecting Joseph Smith Gostick or Gostwick, a native of Keighley, Yorkshire, a builder or cabinet-maker, forty-five years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, strongly built, fair complexion, blue eyes, light-coloured hair, and light-coloured spare beard whiskers and moustache. In 1858 he ran away from home, and worked his passage to Australia. He returned to England in 18G3, and remained with his family for about three months, and again went to Australia as a sailor, it is believed, in the ship “ Light of the Age.” He was subsequently heard of from Waimate, Lake Wakatipu, Timaru, and Dunedin. He was last heard of from Dunedin in 1873, and stated that he was then working as a joiner, cabinet-maker, and shop-fitter, and was also engaged in the erection and fitting-up of stores. He also stated that he married, and had one child, but that both died. He is entitled to a small reversionary interest by the death of his mother, which took place in June, 1887. He is inquired for by Mr. Alfred Platts, solicitor, 7, Queen Street, Bingley, Yorkshire. Photograph in Commissioner’s office.

Information is requested respecting Frederick Fountain, a clerk and messenger, &c., twenty-eight years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, 1311 b. weight, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes. Ho was convicted of stealing from the person at the Supreme Court, Wellington, on the 4th April, 1887, and was released on twelve months’ probation, and ordered to pay £lO eosts. He went to Napier on the 16th April, 1887, and to Woodville on the Ist July following, where he was employed as a cook at Weeks’s boarding-house. He left Woodville on the Ist October last for Wellington, without reporting himself to the Probation Officer, and has not since been seen or heard of.
