Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Supposed stolen about the 3rd September last, from Tauranga, a chestnut liack-mare, in foal, aged, about 13£ hands high, blaze half-way down face, hind fetlocks white, a lump about the size of an egg on back-bone under crupper D, no visible brand; the property of George Thomas Davoren ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stealing horses at Wyndham, the property of Messrs. Carswell, White, and Co.: One of the bay horses died and was not stolen. The other is five years old, a little white on one of hind fetlocks, a white stripe about 3in. long extending from nose upwards, star on forehead, large body; value £l2. The horse branded TW is nine years old, heavy hairy legs, hind legs white very high up, largo blaze down face, some grey hairs on sides; value about £B. The mare is value £7. Malcolm McDonald, who was suspected of stealing the horses, has returned to Wyndham. The bay horse was sold at Dunedin on the 22nd ultimo by John Meikle, of Tuturau; the brand was altered from CL to 03. Meikle says he bought the horse from John Scott, who is suspected of stealing the horses on the road between Wyndham and Mataura about six weeks ago. Scott has left Wyndham, and it is not known where he has gone to. Diligent inquiry should be made for him, and when found he should be asked if he sold the horse to Meikle as alleged, and, if so, how he became possessed of the animal, and how branded when sold to Meikle. These particulars, when obtained, to be at once telegraphed to the Inspector of Police, Invercargill.
