Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, between 4.30 and 5 p.m. on the 24th ultimo, from the person of Thomas Henwood, at Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, a small leather purse with brass clasp, containing a half-sovereign, a cheque on the Union Bank of Australia, Napier, for £33 25., drawn by A. W. Birch in favour of Thomas Henwood; a crossed cheque on the Union Bank of Australia, Napier, for £45, drawn by A. W. Birch in favour of Thomas Henwood ; and a crossed cheque also on the Union Bank of Australia, Napier, for £25, drawn by A. W. Birch in favour of Dan Davis. Cheques identifiable. Description : Supposed English, about twenty-six j r ears of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, slight build, fair complexion, cheeks sunburnt, thin features, drooping nose, dark hair, small fair side whiskers, small fair or brown moustache, chin shaved, large teeth, one supposed out of upper jaw; when last seen wore small-check shep-herds’-plaid coat, blue trousers, soft black-felt hat, and large brass chain with two brass coins attached, but may now be wearing a new dark-tweed sac-suit with small brown and white spots through material. Identifiable. He purchased the new tweed suit at 9 p.m. on the 24th ultimo from Abraham Levy, tailor, Napier, and tendered in payment the cheque for £33 25., which was cashed for him by Mr. Levy.

Stolen on the 3rd or 4th ultimo, from the accommoda-tion-house of William Harris, Christchurch Road, near Kumara, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Coates, Christchurch, whose name is on dial, WH on outside of case, very much worn, value £2 10s.; and an imitation-gold albert chain. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, a German, about thirty-five years of age, sft. Bin. high, medium build, sandy complexion; wore pilot-cloth coat, coloured trousers, black-felt hat, and watertight boots; carried a swag. He went towards Christchurch.

Stolen between the Bth and 17th ultimo, from the shop of James McEwen, Palmerston Street, Riverton, a bolt of canvas, 43 yards long, 2ft. wide, a red lino in centre, marked “No. 4, Merchant Navy,” and “Wilson & Cunningham, Albroth, Manufacturers,” within two circles ; value £2 17s.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from a dwelling in Cass Street, Ashburton, 10s. in silver, the property of John Daniel Stewart; and 7s. in silver, the property of Thomas Dalton.

On the 17th ultimo the dwelling of Charles Thompson, Hot-water Beach, Mercury Bay, was broken into, and about £cwt. gum, value £1 55., stolen.

Stolen on the 3rd ultimo, from the tent of Peter O’Loughlin, Gimmerburn, Lake District, four £1 notes and 6s. 6d. in silver.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop-window of Reuben Isaac, George Street, Dunedin, a small six-cham-bered pin-fire revolver with black wooden handle ; value 12s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 17th and 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Samuel Austey, Fendalton, Christchurch, a large double-breasted brownish-tweed overcoat, about two years in wear, two side pockets with flaps, lining of pockets broken, an inside breast-pocket, one or two buttons off front, may have a strap at back of neck with “ Farmer & Coy., Sydney,” thereon ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Neillie, at the mines, Waiorongomai, Waikato District, a £5 note and eight £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand.

The gold chain and locket stolen from the dwelling of George Thomas Stephenson, Cuba Street, Wellington, have been recovered. They were pledged on the 29th April last at Smart’s pawn office, Manners Street, by a man who gave the name of Ferguson, of whom no description can be obtained.

Stolen between 6 and 7.30 p.m. on the 22nd ultimo, from the shop-door of Nathan Goldwater, Queen Street, Auckland, a pair of tweed trousers and a vest, value 18s., since recovered. The trousers and vest were pawned at Rae’s pawn office, Elliott Street, at 8 p.m. on the same day, by a man who gave his name as George Rodgers, which it is believed is a fictitious name. Description : Tall and stout, looked like a labourer,

dark complexion and hair; wore grey suit and black hard felt hat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27tli or 28th ultimo, from the workshop of Alfred Masters, Princes Street, Dunedin, two hard black-felt hats, unfinished, one unlined and the rim of the other not curled up, but it is stamped “ A Masters, best quality, Dunedin,” on the inside; eighteen boxes of light-coloured thread, twelve spools in each box, “ Clark and Co., Paisley,” stamped on spools and boxes; and a pair of small common scissors ; value £2. Hats identifiable.

On the 27th ultimo the whare of Edmund Smith, Kimberley Road, near Darfield, Christchurch District, was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver keyless Waltham watch, No. 1138349, a dent on the edge of outer case from being held with a pincers, out of repair, value about £4; a plain silver brooch with magenta-coloured stone in centre, value £1; and an old single-rein bridle with bit roughly made by a blacksmith. Identifiable. Swagmen suspected.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from an office in the Government Insurance Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland, five £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand ; the property of James Buckley Watkis.

Between 5 p.m. on the 13th and 5 p.m. on the 14th ultimo the dwelling of Catherine Martin, Union Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver brooch, made of a Spanish coin, of the year 1769 or 1796, a little larger than a five-shilling piece, and a pair of silver earrings, fuchsia-drop pattern; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the tent of John Hoey, Karaka Gumfield, Auckland District, a silver lever huntingwatch, makers Stewart, Dawson, and Co., Liverpool, No. 111575, capped and jewelled in four holes, about a year in use ; value £3 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th or 30th ultimo, from the Royal George Hotel, Newmarket, a black-twill rep overcoat with black lining, bound with black braid, black-clotli buttons, two outside side pockets and a small left-breast pocket, and an inside right-breast pocket, “ Jemmison, Edinburgh,” on strap at collar, a fishhook entangled in one of the pockets ; the property of John McColl; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the shop-door of Peter Samuel Brown, Church Street, Devonport, about 30 yards of black cashmere, about 42in. wide, ticket attached, marked “ British Manufacture ; ” value £3 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from a hut at Finegand, near Balclutha, a £lO note, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand, and a£l note; the property of Alexander Sutherland. Suspicion attached to William Parker, who occupied the hut with complainant. Description: A half-caste negro, a labourer, eighteen years of ago, sft. Bin. high, medium build, black curly hair, no hair on face; dressed in dark-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. He left Balclutha on the 2nd instant by train for Dunedin. He said his parents live in Dunedin.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from a bedroom in the Imperial Hotel, Invercargill, a cheque, No. 835589, on the Bank of Australasia, Invercargill, for £3 35., drawn by Edwin Fisher in favour of “ 123 wages,” dated the 2nd instant; the property of Mary Elliott. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to some of Moore and Ashton’s Minstrel Company, who were staying in the hotel. They have gone to Dunedin.
