(L.S.) Wm. F. DRUMMOND JERYOIS, Governor. A PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS by the sixth section of “The Licensing Act, 1881,” it is enacted that the Governor shall, as soon as conveniently may be after the commencement of the said Act, by Proclamation in the Gazette, from time to time de-

fine districts to be licensing districts under the said Act, and from time to time may alter and redefine the boundaries of the same:

Now, therefore, I, William Francis Dummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby, in pursuance and exercise 'of the powers and authorities vested in me by the said Act, alter and redefine the boundaries of the Norsewood Licensing District, which shall, from and after the first day of September next, be those described in the First Schedule hereto ; and do also hereby proclaim and define the part of the colony mentioned and described in the Second Schedule hereto to be, from and after the said first day of September next, an ordinary licensing district for the purposes of the said Act.

FIRST SCHEDULE Waipawa County.

Norsewood. —The Norsewood Licensing District, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 5, of the 20th January, 1882, excepting therefrom the Town District of Ormondville.

SECOND SCHEDULE Waipawa County.

Ormondville. —All that area being the Town District of Ormondville, as described in the Neio Zealand Gazette No. 53, of the 17th September, 1885. Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this twenty-sixth day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eightv-six. SCHEDULE. Inangahua County.

Hampden. —All that area known as the Hampden Riding of the County of Inangahua, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 63, of the 28tli November, 1876, exclusive of the Owen Special Licensing District, as described in an Order in Council dated the 14th day of August instant. Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same ; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this twenty-sixth day of

As to Becruiting for the Police and Permanent Forces

Governor. A PROCLAMATION. Under Defence Act and Police Act, 1886,

THE Police Force shall be recruited only from men serving in the Permanent Militia, and who have so served at least one year. The Artillery, Engineers, and Torpedo Corps, with the exception of special artificers, engineers, or electricians, shall be selected from the Rifle Branch of the Permanent Militia.

Appointments to the Permanent Militia, Rifle Branch, are to be exclusively given to efficient Volunteers of not less than three years’ efficient service, nor over twenty-five years of age, at the date of their application. The following regulations are published for the guidance of Volunteers desirous of entering the Rifle Branch of the Permanent Militia.

Applicants for appointments to the Permanent Militia, Rifle Branch, will send in their applications to the Defence Office, with their addresses, ages, medical certificates of fitness, and certificates of character, one of which must be from the Commanding Officer of the corps in which they are serving.

As vacancies arise, appointments will be offered to the seniors on the list of applicants from each part of the colony in turn. On his being informed that he has been so appointed, the candidate will report himself for enrolment at Mount Cook Barracks, Wellington, within one month, otherwise the vacancy will be offered to the next on the list, and ho will be held to have forfeited his appointment, unless in case of certified sickness, when he may be replaced at the head of the list within three months, if then fit for service.
