Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

John McAuley is charged, on warrant issued by tlio Wellington Bench, with stealing, on the 10th instant, at Wellington, a green-leather purse, with “A. Levin ” in gold letters under flap, containing a cheque for £6 and 15s. in silver ; the property of William Id. Levin. The cheque has since been recovered. Purse identifiable. Description : A native of the colony, usually employed as kitchenman at hotels, about eighteen years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair ; dressed in dark clothes and soft black-felt hat. He is supposed to have gone to Napier. The purse and contents were lost by Mr. Levin on the 10th instant, and on the same day the offender got the cheque cashed, saying at the time that he received it from Mr. Levin.

(See Police Gazette, 1886, pages 57 and 68.) John Campbell, charged on warrant with stealing a dog, the property of William Mclntosh, from Kawarau Station, has been arrested by Detective Terence O’Brien, Oamaru Police, and remanded to Cromwell. The dog died while in the offender’s possession.

Watch and chain identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from off a horse at Oxford, Waikato District, a nearly-new colonial-made stock-saddle, largo knee-pads, plain seat, and imitation hogskin flaps, and a blue sacldle-cloth; the property of Daniel O’Connor; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 11th instant, from the yacht of Dr. Macdonald, off Rattray Street Jetty, Dunedin, two brass channel-plates, about 6in. long by ljin. wide, one of them is slightly twisted ; value £2. Identifiable. The plates were used for fastening the bowsprit-shrouds of the yacht.

The tarpaulin, the property of Malcolm McFarlane, stolen from off a stack at Coldstream, near Rangiora, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of William Newcomb, arrested by Constable Thomas Nestor, Rangiora Police, and bound over in his own recognizance in the sum of £SO to come up for sentence when called upon.

Stolen between the 7th and 10th instant, from an outhouse at Cave Valley, near Oamaru, an old doublebarrel muzzle-loading gun, size 14 bore, maker Richards, Liverpool, common, ramrod, not neatly finished; the property of William Harbridge ; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 28th ultimo and Bth instant, from the premises of Eliza R. Eraser, Erasertown, Hawke’s Bay District, an oval 10-gallon boiler with a dent in corner, and a china hand-basin, white, pink, blue, and gold pattern; value 18s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 9th instant, at Waikaia, a corrugatediron chimney, 10ft. long and about 12in. in diameter; the property of Mrs. John E. Garvie ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen during August last, from an unoccupied house at Mangere, near Onehunga, a double-barrel central-fire breech-loading gun; the property of Major Shepherd ; value £7 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd instant, from off a horse at Shirley, Christchurch District, a nearly-new horse-cover, with long leather strap in front; the property of Thomas T. Dingle ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 23rd instant, at Pleasant Valley, Timaru District, eighteen bags of oats ; the property of Thomas Greenall; value £5 15s.
