Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 19tli or 20th ultimo, from a cabin of the steamer “ Waihi,” at Blenheim, a cash-box containing a £5 note, nine £1 notes, a sovereign, six pocket-knives, seventeen sewing-machine needles, a small bottle, a scarf-ring, and some papers, &c.; the property of John Thomas Nutt. On the morning of the 20th ultimo the box was found broken open in the yard of the forge of Edward James, Grove Road, Blenheim. It contained all the property except the money.

Stolen in December or January last, at Inalia, near Manaia, 8J chains of two-strand four-barbed galvanized wire, had been about a year in use; the property of Ackroyd Palliser Costobodie ; value 10s.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, at Skeet Road, near Normanby, 19£ bags of cocksfoot grass-seed ; value £ls; the property of Joseph Lewis. Bags identifiable. Ten bags of the seed have since been recovered. They were found secreted in the bush about a mile from where stolen.

Trousers and vest and horse-covers and wedges identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the barn of Alexander Darward, Murray’s Flat, near Waitahuna, three £1 notes and 7s. in silver; the property of William Carter. Also a half-sovereign and 7s. Gd. in silver; the property of Robert Chant.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the gold-mining claim of William Barnsley, at Round Hill, Southland District, a copper plate, 4ft. by 2ft., with some amalgam thereon; value £3.

Stolen between the Ist and 7th instant, from on board the barquentine “Yoland,” at Aratapu, a silver Geneva hunting-watch, steel hands, a darkish spot on dial, maker’s name and number not known ; a silver albert chain, round short-link pattern ; and a gilt locket containing the likeness of two women, a horseshoe on front of locket; the property of Edward Petersen ; value £4 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to D. Daveney, who was employed as boatswain on board the vessel. Description: English, twenty-nine years of age, sft. sin. high, sallow complexion, Wellington nose, clean-shaved except black moustache ; wore long shepherds’plaid coat and white belltopper-hat; sometimes wears a dark-tweed suit. He left Aratapu on the 4th instant by steamer for Auckland.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from off a horse at Waimate, a nearly-new colonial-made pigskin-saddle, small knee-pads, a patch of new leather on top of near knee-pad, new whiteserge lining, a new leather girth, thin stirrup-leathers with buckles rivetted on to them, and an old single-rein bridle with a new piece of leather sewn on top of headstall, and an old iron snaffle-bit; the property of Mark Healey; value £4 13s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, on board the steamer “ Wallabi,” at Wanganui River, a morocco - leather pocketbook, containing six £1 notes, five sovereigns, a half-sovereign, and a cheque No. D 30040, on the National Bank, Wanganui, for £1 3s. 4d., drawn by James Leys in favour of Rowlands ; the property of Henry Waller. Pocketbook and cheque identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th instant, at Governor’s Bay, near Lyttelton, an open-faced silver lever keyless watch, well worn, maker Johnston, Liverpool, whose name is on dial; the property of John Beecher; value about £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 25th ultimo, from a buggy, at Cambridge, two hair-cushions covered with brown leather, and a black whalebone carriage-whip ; the property of John Brown; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant at the racecourse, Greytown, a dark-brown leather purse, sJin. by 3in., four compartments, elastic cut off, containing two and a half dozen foreign postage-stamps ; the model of a horse with legs broken off, used as a scarf-ring; a gold ring, recently enlarged ; three letters from the Crown Lands Office, Wellington; and a receipt for 308 acres of land in the Forty-mile Bush, Section 34, Block 111. ; the property of David Sutter ; value £1 12s. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the yard of Whitelaw and Day, at Kamo, an 18-gallon beer-cask, marked “Hancock & C 0.,” a brass ring round bung; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from on board the steamer Wellington, at the wharf, Russell, a shoe-trunk, covered with oilcloth, containing a ladies’ new dark-green dress trimmed with green satin and lace, a ladies’ dark-brown fur cape, two cream coloured silk capes, a ladies’ black necktie, two boys’ black-and-white straw hats, a girl’s cream-coloured silk bonnet, a hat trimmed with maroon velvet and satin, a pink dress, a red woollen petticoat, a red and navy-blue straw hat, a babies’ white dress and petticoat, three pairs of children’s drawers, four pairs of children’s blue and maroon stockings, a brown earthenware teapot, and two small white basins ; the property of James Deery ; value £9 10s. Trunk and clothing identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from over the shop-door of Thomas Woods, Fleet Street, Dunedin, a calico sign, 6ft. by 4ft., with “Thomas Woods, Waterproof Boot and Shoe Manufacturer; Single Pairs of Boots sold at Wholesale Prices ; V.R.,” printed on both sides; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 4th instant, from a garden in Riddiford Street, Wellington, three camellia plants, about three years old; the property of Henry Lepper; value £llos. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, at Waipawa, a swag consisting of a drab rug, chock pattern with tassels at ends, a brown rug with red-and-yellow stripes across it, a white twill shirt, a drab twill shirt, a bag containing two nightcaps made of white flannel and roughly sewn, a pair of knitted woollen drawers, some sacks, a haversack containing letters and two policies, one in the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Association, and the other in the New Zealand Accident Association, both in favour of George Russell; the property of George Russell; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from the yard of John Pugh Jones, St. Clair, Caversham, a common brown drake and a white Aylesbury duck ; value 6s. Identification doubtful.

A man, who gave his name as Oliver, which may be a fictitious name, is charged with stealing, on the 23rd ultimo, at the railway-station, Invercargill, a railway-ticket from Invercargill to Winton, value 2s. Bd., since recovered; the

property of Hugh Duncan. Description: Looked like a labourer, between forty and fifty years of age, about sft. Bin. high, stout build, broad face, hair turning grey; wore light clothes, about half worn. He left the train at Winton on the 23rd ultimo.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from off a horse at Bull’s, a small hunting-saddle, about two years in use, in good repair, near flap turned up, newly stuffed, and lined with chequered collar-lining, supposed stamped “ H. Sanson, Saddler, Sandon,” large rusty steel safety - spring stirrup-irons, one of stirrup-leathers broken and sewn together, and a narrow white-web girth, repaired with a piece of bagging ; the property of Frederick Roberts ; value £5.
