Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing from the Lyttelton Hotel, at Lyttelton, on the 17th ultimo, a swag consisting of a white blanket, a small piece of white calico sewn on one of the corners, a pair of blucher boots, a pair of old grey-tweed trousers, a white towel, and a pair of blue dungarees; the property of Herbert Kirkham; value £1 10s. Identifiable. Description : Supposed Irish, labourer, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout square build, fresh complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved except fair moustache and imperial; wore dark sac-coat, light trousers, and soft black-felt hat. Identifiable. Supposed gone to Christchurch.

Stolen on the night of the 12tli ultimo, from the person of James Lodder, while drunk, at Auckland, a nearly-new silver English lever hunting-watch, number not known, maker Settle Brothers, London ; and a silver chain, one large and two small links alternately, each stamped G.S.; value £B. Identifiable.

On the night of the 27th ultimo the dwelling of William Thompson, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, was broken into and a pair of blucher boots, value ss. lid., not identifiable, stolen.

Stolen between 3 p.m. on the 12th and noon on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary Pye, Queen Street, Auckland, a heavy silver band bracelet, 2 inches wide, chased; a silver bracelet, 1 inch wide, chased ; a large round gold locket, with knobs on the outer edge, raised leaves on one side, and chased on the other; a gold necklet, smalllink pattern; a pair of small gold earrings, drop shape, with small leaves on top; and a small round silver locket, chased on one side and plain on the other; value £7 10s. Between 5 p.m. on the 19th and 8 a.m. on the 20th ultimo a house on the premises of Margaret Muir, Moray Place, Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: Eight keys of common door-locks and seven keys of mortise door-locks, value £1 10s., not identifiable ; a carpenters’ clawhammer and a tomahawk, value 55., identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the Clarendon Hotel, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a brown-check ulster, with six black-bone buttons, two outside pockets, not much worn; the property of William Thomas Hubbard ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from Patrick Hurley’s hetel, Patea, three flasks of brandy, branded “ Vineyard Society, ” had a small glass inverted over the cork; and a flask of whiskey, branded “Lockaber;” value 9s. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed Scotch, a swagman, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light-brown hair, red moustache, and small red whiskers; wore a black sac-coat, soft black-felt hat, and grey trousers. Sock visible through the toe of his right boot, which was cut away. Went in the direction of Waverley.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Ward, Ross, Westland, an electro-plated dinner-fork, des-sert-fork, tablespoon, dessertspoon, and teaspoon, identifiable ; and 19s. in silver, not identifiable.

Stealing a watch and chain from the person of Joseph Hewson, on the 25th November last: Henry Titschall has been arrested for this offenco by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour. The watch and chain have been recovered, and traced to offender’s possession.

Between 4 p.m. on the 13th and 8.30 a.m. on the 15th ultimo the office of the Peril Hill Railway and Coal Company, Vogel Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: A wliite-hone-handled office-knife, about fifty small indiarubber types, a box of steel pens, branded “ Ferguson and Mitchell, Dunedinfour small brass weights, an indiarubber eraser, an agate still, 3d. in coppers, and some postage-stamps; value 11s. Eraser, office-knife, and types identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist November last and the 19th ultimo, from the hotel of Alfred J. Parsons, Wanganui, a gold masonic emblem in the shape of a carpenters’ square, each side about 3 inches long by \ inch broad, the 42nd proposition of the first hook of Euclid engraved at the angle, and on the back of the square the words “ Presented to P.M. A. J. Parsons by the members of St. John’s Lodge, Timaru, as a token of esteem, &c had three gold clasps with the words “ St. John’s Lodge, Timaru, No. 1137, E.C.,” engraved on the back of the first, a piece of blue ribbon attached to each clasp; between 3oz. and 4oz. weight; value £25. Identifiable.

Stolen on the night of the 25th ultimo, from the shop of Alfred N. Hyland, Fleet Street, Dunedin, about £2O, consisting of half-crowns, florins, and sixpences. Not identifiable.

Stolen on the night of the 30th ultimo, supposed in the Brunswick Hotel, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, a large leather purse with brass clasp, containing a £5 note and eight single notes, bank and numbers unknown; “ Bridget Daily” written on the memorandum leaves inside; it also contained a receipt signed by Mr. Payne; the property of George Aris. Purse and receipt only identifiable.

Between 1 p.m. on the 13th and 6 a.m. on the 15th ultimo the Bank of New Zealand at Kawakawa was broken into, and an unsuccessful attempt made to break open the safe with a miners’ pick, the point of which was found in the keyhole, which was much battered, the lock injured, and the safe removed several inches out of its place. The office drawers were ransacked, and the documents tossed about the floor. Nothing stolen.

Stolen between 11 p.m. on the 30th and 7 a.m. on the 31st ultimo, from the dwelling of William Edward Paige, Masterton, three bottles of Glenlivet whiskey and a bottle of Hennessy’s brandy; value £1 ss.

Between 8 p.m. on the 30th and 8 a.m. on the 31st ultimo the shop of John Morrison, Ross Place Street, Lawrence, was broken into, and the following stolen : About eighteen pairs of ladies’ kid elastic-side boots with fancy stitching on fronts, about eight pairs of men’s elastic-side boots with iron heel- and toe-plates, except two or three pairs on which there are no toe-plates; about ten pairs of ladies’ plain elastic-side boots, a few pairs of ladies’ plain clastic-side boots, small size ; about six pairs of small laceup boots with nails, and one pair of long gum-boots ; value £2O. Identification doubtful.

During the night of the 30th ultimo an attempt was made to break into the store of Messrs. Herbert and McKinlay, Ross Place Street, Lawrence.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the person of Robert Johnstone, while asleep in a hut at Ida Valley Station, Otago, thirteen £1 notes and 17s. 6d. in silver.

Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from the shop of James Wilkie, Thames Street, Oamal-u, a small calico bag containing a roll of bacon, about 181 b. or 201 b. weight; value 15s. Bag identifiable.
