Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

John Reed, alias Breed, and a man, name unknown, are charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with breaking into the whare of Kopea Tahana, Puahi Pa, near Carterton, between the 24th and 29tli ultimo, and stealing a green- and red-striped chequered blanket, value £1 10s.; a mat, value £8 (rccoverd); a new Maori mat, value £sa piece of greenstone, value £2O (recovered); fourteen pioces of

greenstone (seven of which have been recovered), one piece about 4 inches long, with white bark on one side and tcp, two flat pieces, 4 inches by \ inch, value £l3 ; 2J yards black cloth, value £1; a half-worn Kaiapoi blanket, value £1 ss. Identifiable. 21b. powder and two boxes of guncaps, value 175.; five white shirts, value £1 10s. ; a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of pineapple syrup; value 10s. 6d. Not identifiable. The man, name unknown, is supposed English, between twenty-two and twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, very little hair on face, slovenly appearance. Supposed to have gone to Te Nui or the East Coast. The offenders disposed of part of the stolen property at Taueru, above Masterton.

On the night of the 17th instant the Princess Hotel, Molesworth Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: About 10ib. nailrod tobacco, value £3; about 10s. in silver, and 4s. in coppers; the property of James Bright. Not identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the dwelling of the Rev. J. G. Patterson, Clyde Road, Napier, three £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown, a half-sovereign, and about £llss. in silver; the property of Lena Whitting. Not identifiable.

Attempting to steal from the person of Mrs. Eugene Campbell, at Dunedin Railway Station, on the Bth March last : John Howell has been arrested for this offence by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police.

Stolen between the 25th ultimo and Bth instant, from the tent of Patrick Rohan, Pukerua, a ladies’gold dress-ring, set with three rubies ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen during October last, from the Marine Retreat Hotel, Petone, a black opera-glass, about 5£ inches long, marked GFG over RN in gilt letters ; the property of Nathaniel Valentine; value £3 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James May, English, powder-maker, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, grey hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache. Identifiable. Supposed gone to take charge of the Owake Powdermills, Port Chalmers.

Stolen between the Ist and 17th ultimo, from the Greytown Hotel, Greytown, a leather portmanteau, about 2 feet 3 inches long by 10 inches deep, “ C. Lesser” written on a piece of leather over the lock, a piece of sole leather on outside of portmanteau stamped with a die. Contents : A small red leather writing-desk, several testimonials, a baptismal certificate, &e., a muzzle-loading Colt’s revolver in wooden case, two white shirts, six linen collars, six pairs linen cuffs, six white pocket-handkerchiefs, four or five pairs cotton socks, linen marked “C. Lesser” or C. L.; four small leather photograph cases, containing photographs of ladies ; the property of Charles Lesser; value £5. identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, forty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, rather fat face, shaved; frequents racecourses with wheel of fortune, &c.; associates with Thomas Walker, of Wellington.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the tent of Charles Coad, Skeet Road, near Okaiawa, a sportsman’s knife, white handle, with silver shield, had two blades, saw, corkscrew, picker, punch, tweezers, &c.; |lb. cavendish tobacco, and two tin boxes of matches ; value 16s. Knife only identifiable. Suspicion attached to Edward Davidson, supposed Scotch, a labourer, about thirty years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, residing at Rowan, near Manaia. Identifiable.

Stealing money, &c., on the 20th October last, from the shop of Daniel dime, Jervois Road, Ponsonby, Auckland: John Twohy, John Wingate, Robert Wingate, John Jones, and Thomas Connap have been arrested for this offence by Constables Hobson and Collis, Parnell and Ponsonby Police, and sentenced to be birched.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the person of Patrick McFarlane, while drunk, at the Junction Hotel, Kawakawa, six £1 notes. Not identifiable. Suspicion attached to Joseph Hood, a resident of Kawakawa.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the hut of James T. Parker, Upper Waikaia, Southland, a double-barrelled breach-loading gun, nearly new, under-action, maker “ Murray & Son, London,” stamped on the barrel, very easy action except right trigger, which is difficult to pull; a small piece is broken off the stock near the heel-plate ; value £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Lauchlin Campbell, Scotch, a miner, forty years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, fond of drink. Identifiable. May endeavour to dispose of the gun for drink at Waikaia, Clyde, or Roxburgh.

Between 8 and 10 p.m. on the sth instant the hut of Albert Rogers, Abbot’s Creek, near Green Island, was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver lever hunting-watch, No. 79541, maker W. Ehrhardt, London; a silver chain, curb pattern, with two horseshoe-shaped pendants attached, value £7; a plain colonial-gold ring, with prince’s feather engraved on outside, and the initials T.L. on inside, value £3; an English-gold ring set with greenstone in form of a heart, “10 ” scratched on inside, value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to George Sutton, colonial, a labourer, thirty years of age, 5 feet 8£ inches high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache; wore old dark-tweed sac-coat, grey tweed trousers and vest, navvy boots, carried a red-blanket swag. Identifiable.

Stolen between 7 p.m. on the 7th and 5 p.m. on the 9th instant, from the dwelling of Elizabeth Mclntosh, Wharf Street, Oamaru, a double-barrelled central-fire breech-load-ing shot-gun, barrels 30 inches long, choke-bore, size 12, one of the hammers has been repaired, maker Sholefield, Birmingham; together with a green-cloth gun-cover; value £ls. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the shop of Frederick Charles Dunning, Cashel Street West, Christchurch, four or five bottles of raspberry vinegar, ginger wine, and lollies ; value about £3. Supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th instant, from the dwelling of James Doidge, Stoke, near Nelson, a £5 note and two £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown. Not identifiable.
