Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

£SO Reward. Marine Department, Wellington, N.Z., 9th January, 1884. Whereas the depots of stores and provisions placed by the Government of this colony at Tandy Inlet, at Enderby Island, and at Port Ross, in the Auckland Islands, for the relief of castaway seamen, were, between about tho middle of November and the 23rd December last, broken into and the contents stolen: Notice is hereby given that a reward of fifty pounds will be paid to tho person or persons who shall first give such information as will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who broke into and stole any of the stores or provisions from these depots. (See Police Gazette , 1883, pages 148, 155, and 187.) T. Jones, alias J. Jones, alias Johnson Metcalf, charged on warrant with stealing a watch and chain from tho Prince of Wales Hotel, Auckland, tho property of Mary Ann Elkington, has been arrested by Detective Edward Hughes, Auckland Police.

George Davreal is charged, on warrant issued by the Tauranga Bench, with stealing, on tho 4th instant, from the Star Hotel, Tauranga, two white blankets, nearly new, the property of Thomas Wrigley; value 15s. Identification doubtful. Description: English, a billiard-marker and waiter, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, supposed dark eyes, black hair and moustache, cheeks shaved; dressed in black paget coat, darktweed trousers, straw hat, and running shoes. He left Tauranga during the night of the 4th instant, by the cutter “ Eleanor,” for the Barrier, where he landed on the following day, and, it is supposed, left there for Hamilton by way of Auckland. His mother, who is married a second time, lives at Hamilton, but her present husband’s name is not known. He is supposed to be identical with George Paveral, sentenced at New Plymouth, on the Gth May, 1877, to two years’ labour for horse-stealing. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 153.) He may have a feather pillow and a pillow-case marked “ Star Hotel ” in his possession.

(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 2.) Henrietta Hunter, charged on warrant with stealing £llO from the dwelling of William Shaw, at St. Kilda, has been arrested by Detective Thomas Neil, Christchurch Police, remanded to Dunedin, and committed for trial. £57 of the money has been recovered.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 13th instant, from the Star and Garter Hotel, Oamaru, a coat; value £2; since recovered; the property of John F. Kitching. Description: Supposed Irish, looked like a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, inclines forward, brown hair worn very short, dark-brown beard and moustache; dressed in light-brown sac-coat, dark vest, light-brown trousers, and dark soft-felt hat. Identifiable. He was caught in the act of stealing the coat.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the person of James Williams, while drunk and asleep at Auckland, five £1 notes and 10s. in silver.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the tent of John Jeffrey, at Porirua Bay, a Waltham hunting watch, “Pat Pagon” engraved on works near fly-wheel, number not known, value £3 17s. fid.; a'brass chain, long-link pattern, value 25.; and a small red pocketbook. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 9th and 12th instant, from a portmanteau at Williams’s boarding-house, off Willis Street, Wellington, a single-breasted walking-coat, three buttons in front, blue diagonal cloth with small diamonds or squares,

velvet collar, two skirt-pockets with flaps, bound with fine braid ; tho property of George White ; value £2 12s. fid. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the sth and 12th instant, from the auction rooms of Messrs. Edmunds and Marshall, Adelaide Road, Wellington, two dark-grey dress-pieces, 13 yards in each, value 18s.; a dark-green dress-piece, 124 yards, value 18s.; and a silver-grey dress-piece, IB| yards, value 9s.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from a dwelling at Manaia, a pair of dark-tweed trousers, size 5, a small tear in crutch ; the property of Thomas Stanners ; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Takahu, a Maori, about thirty years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, black hair beard whiskers and moustache.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop-door of James McDowell, Willis Street, Wellington, a ladies’ double-breasted black beaver tight-fitting jacket, coat pattern, cuffs halfbound with same material, one end of braid fastened with a button, twelve round silk buttons down front and eight on back, a little ornamenting on back, plain collar fastened in front with a hook and eye, inside seams bound with dark braid; value £2. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop of Stephen Mulqueen, at Port Chalmers, a pair of men’s lace-up boots, size 9, brass eyelet-holes, four brass hooks on both sides of tops, no toe-caps, no nails in soles, iron tips and toe-plates, partly worn ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the dwelling of Joseph Parfitt, at Koromika, Picton, a dark-leather purse containing two new £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, supposed Nos. 142999 and 143000, Is. fid. in silver, and some old receipts and bills ; a loaf of bread and some tea and sugar. Purse, bills, and receipts identifiable. The two £5 notes have since been found in an envelope under a mat at complainant’s front door.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the person of George Kirby, while drunk and asleep in Roche’s Hotel, Hayes Lake, Otago, a double-cased silver geneva watch, No. 38596 ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the Bth instant, from the dwelling of Mary Ann Scott, Bath Street, Dunedin, a black leather purse with brass clasp and three compartments, containing two half - sovereigns, ninepence in silver, and threepence in coppers. Purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of Professor Haslem, at Upper Riccarton, Canterbury, a few yards of black Maltese lace, and six new pairs of black-silk stockings with coloured embroidery up the sides ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the person of Annie Bird in the Exhibition, Christchurch, a purse containing about 17s. in silver. The purse was found empty on the following day in the Exhibition grounds.
