Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

William Jones, alias White Horse Bill, charged on warrant with breaking into and stealing money from the Otago Daily Times Office, has been arrested by Detective John Mitchell Walker, Dunedin Police, and committed for trial. His accomplices, James Williamson and William Ahern, have also been committed for trial.

During the night of the 13th ultimo the shop of William Gilmour, Symonds Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : A box containing three men’s brown-felt hats with soft crowns, value £1 2s. 6d. ; a box containing about ten soft black-felt alpine hats, with cord and tassels for band, value £1 Bs. 4d. ; three men’s plain fine-twill grey-tweed galatea coats, value £3; about ten pairs of men’s imitation Nelsontweed trousers, value £5 55.; three pairs of men’s tweed trousers, value £3 7s. 6d. ; five pairs of men’s tweed trousers, value £3 13s. 9d.; thirty-three pairs of men’s Mosgiel socks, grey colour, value £4 2s. 6d.; twenty-four pairs of men’s Mosgiel sock-, dark and grey colour, value £1 His. ; twelve Crimean shirts, Mosgiel make, value £5 65.; two boxes of ladies’ linen pocket-handkerchiefs, boxes album pattern, marked lls., value £1 2s. ; eighty-four gentlemen’s silk scarfs, value about £7 ; a pair of gold earrings with drop, value £2 ; and a number of Crimean shirts, perfumery, &c.

Stolen on the 18ih ultimo, from a bedroom in the Imperial Hotel, Don Street, Invercargill, a gold double ring with eight rubies and five small diamonds, value £5 ; and a plain jet-black mourning ring, value 155.; the property of Ann Sproule. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Ching Sing, a Chinese, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed in European clothes; speaks English tolerably well. He is supposed to have gone to Roundhill.

Suspicion attached to William Tipson, a labourer and cooks’ assistant, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, full dark moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in dark suit and soft felt hat.
