Incendiarism.
On the morning of the lGfch ultimo, at Winton Plains, Southland, a two-story barn, containing a large quantity of chaff, 700 bushels of oats, 120 bushels of rye-grass seed, ten bags of •wheat, fifty sheepskins, &c., the property of John Thomson, jun., value about £220, were maliciously destroyed by fire. The barn was insured in the Colonial Office for £IOO, but the contents were not insured.
On the morning of the 21st ultimo the general store of Alexander Gilmour, at Waitara, value about £1,850, was destroyed by fire, which it is supposed was maliciously caused. The back door of the store was found open, and a bag, containing tobacco, tins of preserved fish, salmon, lobsters, milk, and cocoa, was found by t lie police about 15 yards from the back of the store. The building was insui’cd in the Union Office for £2OO and the stock for £750 in the Northern Office, and for £SOO in the Victoria Office.

Setting fire to the house of George Philips, at Ivaikoura: James Campbell was arrested for this offence by Constable William Wilson Smart, Kaikoura Police, but discharged for want of sufficient evidence.
