Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
(See Police Gazette, 1881, pages 37 and 38.) The warrant issued by the Wanganui Bench for the arrest of Richard Quin, for deserting his wife and children, has been cancelled.
John Willis, alias Racehorse Jack, is charged, on warrant issued by the Dargaville Bench, with disobeying a summons to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dargaville, on the 17th ultimo, to answer a charge of using obscene language. Description : Irish, a bushman and gum-digger, thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, stooped shoulders, fair complexion, fair moustache and goatee; usually wears lighttweed trousers, white soft hat, and elastic-side boots. Supposed to have gone to Hokianga.
John Wilson is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with disobeying an order, since about the 23rd May last, to pay 12s. per week for the maintenance of his wife and three children. Description : English, a labourer, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slight build, dark-brown curly hair, small sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, scar on temple ; when last seen wore grey-tweed suit.
Daniel Hirlehy is charged, on warrant issued by the Oxford Bench, with disobeying an order to pay £1 55., due since the 22nd June last, for the support of his children in the Burnham Industrial School. Description : Irish, a labourer, forty-two years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, large full face, flat nose, fair hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache. He ivas working near Geraldine in June last.
Alfred Wadsworth is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife at Orari, Canterbury, in November, 1880. Description : English, formerly an hotelkeeper, thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, very stout build, dark complexion, blue eyes, pockpitted, black hair and whiskers, slight moustache, chin shaved, bow-legged.
Orpen Daniel Finch is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with deserting his wife at Wellington since the 15th ultimo. Description : English, a baker, has been a sailor, thirty-eight years of age, but looks older, 6 feet high, ruddy complexion, rough features, light-brown hair, bald on top of head, light-sandv beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly mixed with grey, pockmarked on shoulders and breast , rather awkward gait; wore light-tweed suit, light-cork helmet, elastic-side boots, and an open-faced silver watch with steel chain. He left Wellington on the 15th ultimo by the steamer “ Wakatipu ” for Sydney, and it is supposed that he will go from there to San Francisco, via Auckland. It is said that he carries poison, which he will endeavour to take if arrested.
Charles Matheson is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife at Dunedin since the 25th ultimo. Description : A Dane, a carpenter and labourer, thirty-eight years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, scar on nose, speaks good English. He is accompanied by his daughter, aged five years, mark of pear on right cheek, and his son, aged ten years, He will likely endeavour to leave the colony.
Antonio Picker Pere is charged, on warrant of commitment to gaol for fourteen days’ labour, issued by the Dargaville Bench, in default of paying £2 fine and 18s. lOd. costs for wilfully destroying property. Description: An Italian, a gum-digger, about forty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches higli, stout build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, rather good-looking, speaks broken English.
(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 45.) RrCHAED Southby, charged on warrant with deserting his wife and children at Waimate, lias been arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police, and remanded to Waimate.
Thomas Parkin Williams is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with deserting his wife at Auckland on the 14tli ultimo. Description : A native of Sydney, a sailor, stockdriver, and shearer, thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark hair and eyes, sandy whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; dressed in light-tweed single-breasted coat, trousers, and vest, and grey wideawake hat. He is supposed to have come to Wellington, accompanied by Kate Doyle, twenty-eight years of age, short stout build, good head of hair.
