Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, pages 191 and 201.) James Hogan, charged on warrant with burglariously entering the Golden Age Hotel, Cromwell, the property of Chai'les McKenna, has been arrested by Constable William Bell, Black’s Police, and remanded to Cromwell.

William Mybeae, charged on warrant with stealing a pair of opera-glasses from the dwelling of James Longbottom, at Auckland, has been arrested by Constable Frederick Wild, Hamilton Police, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

A man, who gave the name of Brown, is charged with stealing, between the 26th and 28th ultimo, from the library of the Young Men’s Christian Association Booms, Moray Place, Dunedin, three books, value £1 10s., since recovered. Description: English, about twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, dark hair, very small whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; wore dark-grey-tweed suit, and hard black-felt hat. Identifiable. He sold the hooks to George Howlands and Charles Shepard, dealers, George Street, Dunedin.

Stolen between 11 p.m. on the Ist and 1 a.m. on the 2nd instant, from the person of Edward Bolleston, whilst drunk, at Dunedin, a £2O note and five £5 notes. Suspicion attached to Thomas Mills, English, a cook, twenty years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, a little fair hair on chin and upper lip ; dressed in dark-biue-cloth coat, grey-tweed trousers and vest, aud soft black-felt hat.

Stealing a casli-box, &c., from the dwelling of John Smith, Matheson’s Road, Phillipstown. The box has been found broken open on the sand-hills near Christchurch. The inner compartment is missing; the letters and bills have been recovered.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the person of a Mrs. McCrystal, in the Princes Hotel, Dee Street, Invercargill, a small black-leather purse, containing a £1 note, about 18s., a cheque for £2 on the Colonial Rank, Invercargill, No. 1044, drawn by David Roche. Cheque and purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the shop-door of W. Munroe, Cuba Street, Wellington, 25 yards of ladies’ grey-cotton dress material; value £1 ss.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of William Taylor, at Karaka Plat, Waitotara.—The cheque-book has been recovered, and traced to the possession of Wiremu Hiroki, arrested by a party of Armed Constabulary, and committed for trial.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the shop of Ernest Alfred Garnett, Cashel Street, Christchurch, an ordinary-sized cricketbat, with private mark on top of handle ; value 15s. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 19th ultimo an attempt was made to break into the dwelling of William Hill, Hacket Street, Ponsonby, by endeavouring to force open one of the windows.

STOLEN on the 18th ultimo, from a bedroom in the dwelling of John Henry Upton, Shelly Beach, Auckland, two sovereigns and 3s. 6d. in silver.

TitE two shawls stolen from the shop of James Wood, at Napier, have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Lena Hoff, arrested by Detective Martin Grace, Napier Police, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

The gold watch and chain, &c., supposed stolen from the person of Alexander Murphy, while drunk, at Wellington, have been recovered. Suspicion no longer attaches to Jessie Walker and Arthur Jones, alias Punch.

Stolen during the night of the 2nd instant, from a bedroom in the Victoria Hotel, Featherston, six £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and a£l note on the Bank of Australasia; the property of Louis Truman. Identifiable. Five of the Bank of New Zealand notes have since been recovered; they were found concealed under a box outside the bedroom.

Supposed stolen on the 19th or 20th ultimo, from the person of James Todd, while drunk at Tapanui, a silver lever hunting watch, maker W. Nicol, Balclutha, No 119650; steel chain with bit in centre attached; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 14th and 20th ultimo, from the whare of Patrick Shaw, at Poraugahau Station, Hawke’s Bay, a ladies’ double - case gold watch with gold face, maker’s name and number not known; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Carroll, Scotch, a shearer, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, black whiskers ; rides a big bay mare with sore wither. His family reside at Bull’s.

On the 26th or 27th ultimo the office of William Henry Hargreaves, Lichfield Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and a cheque for £1 6s. 7d. ou the Bank of Australasia, Christchurch, dated the 25th ultimo, drawn by W. S. Allen in favour of Mr. Hargreaves, stolen. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19tli ultimo, from the hut of William Ring, Level’s Station, near Pleasant Point, a red-leather purse with clasp, containing 19s. in silver, and a pair of dark-moleskin trousers with dark stripe at sides; value 10s. fid. Purse and trousers identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man known as Big Pat, Irish, about forty years of age, 6 feet high, light hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, worn long ; dressed in old faded blue-monkey jacket, right breast torn, and old torn trousers, but may be wearing the stolen ones. He is supposed to have gone to Tirnaru or Albury.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24t,h ultimo, from the person of Richard Horsman, while drunk at Dunedin, three £5 notes and forty-eight £1 notes. This is considered a doubtful case.

On the 28th ultimo the dwelling of William Robinson, Clydcvale Station, Otago, was broken into, and the following stolen : A Crimean shirt, considerably worn ; a pair of woollen drawers, small size; and a common white pocket looking-glass; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen in August last, from a bodroom in Muller’s boardinghouse, Timaru, a nearly-new dark-bluc-cloth paget-coat and vest, a nearly-new navy-blue trousers, and a long dark-blue-clotli overcoat, dark-grey lining, cloth buttons ; the property of William Mossman ; value £4 103. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from a bedroom in Leahy’s boarding-house, Hobson Street, Auckland, a silver Genova hunting watch, case engraved, No. 5928; the property of Charles Ramsay ; value £5 2s. Identifiable.

On the 20th ultimo the Queen’s Head Hotel, Auckland, the property of Joseph Boulter, wn9 broken into, and four bottles of gin and old tom stolen.

Between 8.50 pun. on the 20th and 8 a.m. on the 21st ultimo the chemist’s shop of Stephen Gilbert, Queen Street, Auckland, was broken into and ransacked, but nothing was stolen.

On the 20th ultimo the shop of Annie Lloyd, Victoria Street, Auckland, was broken into, and £4 la. 6d. in silver stolen.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from a till in the shop of Thomas Armstrong, Colombo Street, Christchurch, 14s. in silver.

On the morning of the 19th ultimo the dwelling of Theopliilus Cooper, Ponsonby, Auckland, was burglariously entered, but nothing was stolen.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the person of Charles Fynmore, at the Eorbury Racecourse, Dunedin, an old brownleather pocketbook, 5 by 3 inches, with red-elastic band, “ Eymnore ” written with ink on inside, containing a £5 note and three £1 notes on the Colonial Bank. Pocketbook identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the person of Kate O’Brien, while in a tram-car at Dunedin, an old leather purse, 3 by 2 inches, with elastic band, containing a cheque for £6 Bs. on the Bank of New Zealand, Port Chalmers, drawn by John Colehan. The cheque was cashed on the same clay at the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, and indorsed “ William Francis.”

Stolen between the 27th ultimo and 3rd instant, from a bedroom in Cox’B hoarding-house, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a silver lever hunting watch, maker S. A. Brooks, London, No. 2795 ; the property of John Kemp ; value £5. Identifiable.
