Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Robert Tindall, charged on warrant with stealing a pair of boots from the shop door of Andrew Clark, at Christchurch, has been arrested by Sergeant Alexander Wilson, Christchurch Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Stephen Walsh, alias Green, is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with stealing, on the 19th ultimo, from the person of John Blanche, at Christchurch, a cheque, since recovered, on the Union Bank of Australia, Christchurch, for £9 14s. 4d. Description: A native of Dublin, a seaman and labourer, forty-one years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, light-grey eyes, brown hair, wen tumour on forehead, woman and star, sailor, and woman on right arm, Scotch girl dancing and CGM on left arm, bracelet on left wrist; when last seen wore old gi*ey-tweed coat, moleskin trousers, and light-grey soft felt hat. He is identical with Stephen Walsh, sentenced at Christchurch on the 7th July, 1879, to eighteen months’ labour for larceny. (See Police Gazette, 1880, page 177-) He went South on the 19th ultimo.

Thomas Reid, charged with stealing a waterproof coat, the property of Michael Linehan, from the Carriers’ Arms Hotel, Invercargill, has been arrested by Sergeant Thomas McGann, Invercargill Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Victor Martin is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with stealing a purse containing a £1 note and 4d. from the person of Petrina Anderson, at Christchurch, on the 12th instant. Purse identifiable. Description : Scotch, a labourer, twenty years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, slight build, no hair on face; dressed in blue paget coat, light greytweed trousers and vest, and soft black-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Rabbit Island, Kaiapoi.

George F. D. McCullocii is charged, on warrant issued by the Invercargill Bench, with stealing, between the 9tli September last and the 9th instant, from the warehouse of Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach, Deo Street, Invercargill, three lamp brackets, a razor and a razor-strop, a child’s hair-brush, a nailbrush, two pocket-knives, a dog-collar, and eleven boxes of matches, since recovered; value £2 16s. 3d. Description : A native of Victoria, Irish parentage, an assistant-shopman, about twenty-nine years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except small light side whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark-tweed coat, light-tweed trousers and vest, and black-felt hat. lie spoke of going to Newcastle, New’ South Wales.

A MAN, name unknown, is charged with stealing, about the 26th ultimo, from the person of John Ramage, at Balclutha, a silver watch and gold albert chain with greenstone pendant, since recovered; value £l2 2s. 6d. Description: Supposed Irish, a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, rather dark complexion, sharp features, short dark hair turning grey, dark beard and moustache also turning grey, whiskers about an inch long; wore dark-tweed jacket and trousers, no vest, and diamond-pattern cloth hat; carried a calico swag with a grey- or blue-blanket sw r ag, and a billycan tied on top. He left Stirling on the sth instant, supposed for Waitahuna or Lawrence. He sold the watch and chain on the sth instant at Stirling.

The cash-box stolen from the shop of Henry Edgar Eton, at Christchurch, has been found, broken open and empty, on the South Town Belt.

Stolen about (he 6th instant, from the person of Denis Murphy, while drunk at Christchurch, a silver hunting lever watch, maker Henry Dixon, London, No. 50212, JG engraved on outside of case, leather guard attached, value £6 ; two £5 notes, seven £1 notes, two half-sovereigns, and about 19s. in silver. Watch and guard identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the dwelling of James Hinchcliff, Waitaki South, Oamaru, an English brown-leather portmanteau, 19 inches long, containing a gold albert chain, longlink pattern with two bars across each link ; a gold finger-ring with oval stone, C on outside, Bros, on inside ; a scarf-ring with kangaroo on outside, tw r o plain gold sleeve-links (larger than a fourpenny piece), a gold collar-stud, a dark frock-coat, a pair of striped-tweed trousers, a soft black hat, a clothes-brush with white back, about a dozen scarfs, diflorent patterns ; a dozen linen collars, six cambric handkerchiefs, a white shirt, and a pair of small scissors; value £27 6s. Identifiable, except scarfs, shirt, and collars. Suspicion attached to William Shannon, a native of London, a labourer, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, fair moustache, no beard or whiskers, smart appearance; had been in the army ; has a brown retriever dog with him. He left Oamaru on the 7th instant by train for Dunedin.

Stolen between 11 and 12 a.m. on the 15th instant, from the dwelling of Edward Genever, at South Dunedin, a ladies’ gold open-face lever watch, and a long gold chain, greenstone pendant, with a new rivet through cap, attached ; value £23 10s. Identifiable. The watch and chain were subsequently pledged at Solomon’s pawn office, George Street, Dunedin, on the day they were stolen, by a boy who gave the name of Smith, but whose correct name is believed to be Edward Payne. Description : English, fifteen years of age, 5 feet high, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, bandy-legged; wore bluecloth jacket, rough grey trousers and vest, blue-cotton shirt, and soft black-felt hat. He left his home at Cargill Road, South Dunedin, on the 15lh instant, and has not since been heard of.

During the night of the 15tli instant the store of Simon Conway, at Maheno, was broken into, and the following stolen : Two pairs of brown-moleskin trousers, three grey-cotton shirts, a pair of balmoral boots, and a few pairs of woollen socks ; value £2 ss.

Stolen on the 15th instant, from the hut of Edward Higginson, at Coalstream, near Rangaiora, a dark-morocco purse, two compartments with a brass clasp on each, containing a cheque

for £2 on the Bank of New Zealand, Rangiora, drawn by Chennery and Wise in favour of George Gorrie, three £1 notes, a half-sovereign, 4s. 7d., and two small keys. Purse and cheque identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who presented the cheque at Conway’s Hotel, Woodend, on the day it w'as stolen. Description : Supposed English, about twenty-four or twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, very small fair beard, whiskers, and moustache, thin pale features ; wore light-tweed coat and vest, coloured-moleskin trousers (faded), browu billycock hat with new leather strap round it, and plaid woollen muffler. He went towards Christchurch.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the office of William Hunter Matlieson, at Wyndham, Southland, two double-barrel centralfire breech-loading fowling-pieces, G.H. engraved on the silver stock-plate of one ; both value £35. Identifiable.

Stolen between the Ctli and Bth instant, from the dwelling of Henry Addenbrooke, at Brunswick Line, Wanganui, a new sixclmmbered revolver, maker Trenter, fifty cartridges, a ladies’ gold-keeper ring with “Priscilla Stone Briscoe” engraved on inside, and a ladies’ common gold ring with one red and two blue stones ; value £25. Revolver and rings identifiable. The revolver and cartridges have since been recovered. They were found by Sergeant Adam Bissett and Detective Maurice Sullivan, Wanganui Police, in possession of William Miners, who has been committed for trial for the offence. The rings have not been recovered. Miners has also been committed for trial on another charge of stealing a purse and money, &c., from the dwelling of James A. King.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 2.) The cheque and pawn-ticket stolen from the person of Walter Burrell, at Ashburton, have been recovered. They were found concealed in a bed in the Temperance Boarding-house, Ashburton.

The cameo brooch stolen from the dwelling of Alexander Cairns, at Dunedin, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of Ellen Whittet, who has been arrested by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police, and discharged.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the person of Eugene Courtney, in Jollie’s Pass Hotel, Hamner Plains, Canterbury, an old open-face English silver lever watch, No. 98064 or 90864, a small hole punched in back case, maker s name not known, a piece of snake-pattern brass chain attached; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from a hut at All-day Bay, Otago, a new dark-tw'eed paget coat, a vest of same material, a new pair of dark-tweed trousers with dark stripes, two pairs of new merino drawers, and a pair of new elastic-side boots ; the property of Geerge Henderson; value £8 6s. Identifiable. Also a grey blanket with red-and-grey stripes, a woollen shirt w r ith red-and-white stripes, and a dark-and-yellovv-striped grey-canvas shirt; the property of Patrick Neill; value £l. Identifiable, except the blanket.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from the Mitre Hotel, Lyttelton, a nearly-new long rough dark-blue overcoat with velvet collar, one inside and one outside breast-pocket, a row of black-bone buttons covered with blue cloth down front; the property of Charles Kay ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop-door of G. L. Beatli and Co., Cashel Street, Christchurch, a boys’ black worsted knickerbocker suit: value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of James Fraser, Melville Street, Dunedin, a silver lever hunting watch, makers Walsh and Son, Melbourne, No. 71414 small gold albert chain, oval-link pattern, attached; value £9. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Robert Cochrane, Scotch, fifty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, grey hair, brown whiskers turning grey, chin and upper lip shaved. He is employed as a carrier between Palmerston and Hogburn.

Stolen between the stli and the 7th instant, from a bedroom in the All Nations Hotel, Westport, a pockctbook containing ten £1 notes, six half-sovereigns, and about £2 in silver; the property of Charlotte Shelley. The pocketbook has since been found, empty, near the river at Westport.

Stolen during the night of the Bth instant, from a bedroom in the Railway Hotel, Pleasant Point, three £IOO notes, two on the Bank of New Zealand and one on the Union Bank of Australia, and ss. in silver ; the property of John Hart. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who slept in the room with complainant and left during the night. Description: Supposed to be a North of Ireland man, about thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, florid complexion, sharp pointed nose, full dark beard and whiskers tinged with grey on chin ; wore dark-tweed vest, blue trousers, and soft black hat, no coat; cai'ried a blue-blanket swag.

Stolen during the night of the 13th instant, from the dwelling of John F. W. Grierson, at Bingsland, a black-cloth coat and vest, a black-serge coat and vest, coat buttons to throat; a brown-striped tweed coat, a pair of grey-striped tweed trousers, a pair of green-and-yellow clastic braces, a white pocket-hand-kerchief, an envelope containing eight Standard Insurance policy papers, a brown-leather purse, a bunch of four keys, and a silver pencilcase ; value £lO 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of Ernest Leight, at New Plymouth, an open-face Geneva watch, gilt, but the gilt is partly worn off; Stan tier maker, No. 35454. Identifiable.

During the night of the 12th ultimo a hut at Edendale Station, Southland, was broken into, and the following stolen : A double-breasted dark-tweed pageb coat, a blue-napped overcoat, a pair of light-tweed trousers with small stripe, a lightcoloured vest, and 18s. in silver ; the property of M. Aylwoode ; value £lO. Clothing identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the office of Edw r ard Genever, at the gasworks, South Dunedin, a new surveyors’ steel measuring-tape, 66 feet long, feet and inches marked on one side, and hundredth parts of yards on the other side; value £1 7s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the dwelling of Kate Grant, Richmond Grove, near Invercargill, a pair of shoes, half kid and half satin uppers, lined with red-and-blue satin, eyeletholes with red-and-blue satin string through them, very high heels, not much worn; value £2 ss.
