Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

George Dell is charged, on warrant issued by the Ashburton Bench, with stealing, on the 26th of May last, from the hut of John McGuire, at Orari, a new tent, made of white drill and unbleached calico; value £1 15s. Identifiable. Description: Supposed English, a labourer, about forty or forty-five years of

age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, round-shouldered and knockkneed ; wore grey-tweed suit, soft black-felt hat, and water-tight boots. He at one time kept an hotel in Christchurch.

John Willhoet is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with stealing, on the 26tli ultimo, from the dwelling of Eobert Ings, at Tomahawk Yalley, a saddle with one girth, a very strong nearly-new bridle, and a light-grey mackintosh coat, with brown buttons; one button off; value £5. Identifiable. Description: A German, but speaks good English, a labourer, nineteen years of age, 6 feet high, stout build, fair complexion and hair, small fair beard, whiskers, and moustache, broad face, small eyes, and flat nose.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from a bedroom in the Captain Cook Hotel, King Street, Dunedin, an oval-sliaped gold brooch, about 2by inches, carbuncle in centre, fancy work all round, gold pendant carbuncle and fringe, value £l2 ; an oval-shaped locket-brooch, about 1£ by 14 inches, largo leaf in centre, a rose on each end, a thistle on one side and a shamrock on the other, value £8; and two sixpences; the property of John Scott. Suspicion attached to Samuel Lupton, English, a tailor, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, sharp features, darkbrown hair, whisker’s, and moustache, chin shaved ; had been in the army.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from tho Imperial Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a brown-silk umbrella with brown handle, and a greenish-brown-speckled waterproof-coat with light-buff-velvet collar and drab buttons, flap pockets —two on right side and one on left—in which were a wooden pipe and a black oilcloth umbrella cover; the property of Edward Thomas Collinson ; value £2 ss. Stolen about the 28th ultimo, from an hotel at Kowai Pass, a new black-and-white check-pattern overcoat, with belt, two outside pockets, and an inside breast pocket; the pi’operty of John McKenzie; value £3. Identification doubtful.

Morgan, George and King Streets, Dunedin, have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Mary Edwards, who has been arrested by Detective Eobert Bain, and sentenced to three months’ labour for each offence. The woollen scarfs were not stolen from Mr. Morgan’s shop.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, Port Chalmers, a ladies’ plain gold keeper ring; the property of Catherine Penchion; value 12s. 6d. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. O’Connor or O’Connell, who lives near Blueskin. Description : Irish, forty years of age, fresh complexion, brown hair, light-blue eyes; wore blue-serge dress.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the person of John Donovan, while drunk at Auckland, a silver lever Geneva hunting watch, a slight indent iu front case, and a thick brassmounted hair guard ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the Congregational School, Manchester Street, Christchurch, two boys’ ulster overcoats, pne dark-blue cloth, the other dark grey, both of rough knotted

material like Irish frieze, with hrown bone buttons, a large and a small button on the belt of one, the lining of one of the sleoves of the other ripped and resewn with long stitches; the property of Marion Dunlop ; value £2. Identifiable.

Between the Ist of March last and 7th ultimo, the dwelling of James B. Wilson, Waimakariri Gorge, was broken into and the following stolen: Three pairs of twill sheets, two pairs of grey blankets, five wliite-cotton table-covers, a scarlet-and-black table-cover, a blue-cloth double-breasted coat, and a nearly-new double-rein bridle ; value £8 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen about the sth ultimo, from the dwelling of John Dunsmuir, at Whangarei, two £5 notes.

Stolen about the 14th of April last, from the dwelling of Joseph Bell, at Napier, a medium-sized colonial-gold locket, chased on one side; value £2 10s. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to Mary Curnane, who was employed as a servant in the house at the time the locket was stolen. Description: Irish, twenty years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the Central Hotel, Ashburton, a very dark rough-grey long frock over-coat with black velvet collar, skirt pocket torn; the property of H. Whalley; value £2. Suspicion attached to Henry Shirley, a native of Napier, a billiard-marker, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, dark hair, usually clean-shaved, sallow complexion, scar on bridge of nose, which is broken; peculiar walk as if his leg had been broken ; generally wears black clothes and white shirt. He was seen in Dunedin on the 28th ultimo.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Jetty Hotel, Kaitangata, a silver lever watch, with “ R. Dowl, Tokomariro,” on face, and a long gold chain ; the property of John Walker; value £ls. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Watson, Scotch, a labourer, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache. He has gone to Green Island.
