Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A MAN, name unknown, is charged with haring, on the 9th ultimo, stolen from the shop-door of George Quarterman, High Street, Christchurch, a pair of trousers, since recovered ; value 10s. Description : Looked like a labourer, between thirty-five and forty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, fair hair, reddish beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wore dark-brown coat torn at back, dirty white moleskin trousers, and dirty drab billycock hat. He is believed to be identical with James Hoskins Chubb. (For description see Police Gazette, 1878, page 169.)

A man, name unknown, is charged with breaking into the store of Joseph Nathan and Co., at Bull’s, on the 15th ultimo, and stealing two suits of clothes, two flannel shirts, six pairs of stockings, three pairs of cotton hose, four pairs of boots, five sticks of tobacco, 2 lb. of candles, three cakes of blacking, three tins of knife-polish, and three stone of pearl barley ; since recovered. Description : About 5 feet 8 inches high ; wore a monkey-jacket and a cap. He was detected coming from the store carrying a bag containing the stolen property, which he dropped, and made his escape.

Stolen between the 9th and 14th ultimo, from the hut of Peter Moller, Timaru, Taranaki District, a brass-mounted purse with three compartments, containing a £lO note supposed on the Bank of New South Wales, sixteen £1 notes, and a receipt for £2OO signed by Thomas Hammerton. Purse and receipt identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas Shaw, English, a carpenter, forty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, whiskers, and moustache mixed with grey ; wore dark-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat; drunken appearance. He is at present residing at Okato.

Stolen about the 10th ultimo, from the shop of James Mulligan, High Street, Christchurch, two suits of clothes ; value £5. The clothes have since been found in a water-closet at the rear of the White Hart Hotel.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the shop-door of George Brown, Princes Street, Dunedin, a blue pilot overcoat, with nap, lined with grey waterproof cloth, two pockets on right side, and three buttons on each side; size 6.

Stolen between the 31st of May and the 2nd ultimo, from the dwelling of John Hedrington, Croydon, near Gore, a very long single-barrel gun, a small piece broken out of point of butt, breech screw loose, ramrod rusty; a single shot-pouch, and a flask of powder.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, High Street, Dunedin, two £lO notes on the Bank of New Zealand, a silver lever hunting watch, “Rotherham” on dial, and a curb-pattern gold albert guard with horse-bit in centre ; the property of James Wilson; value £l2. Watch and guard identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Grimer, who occupied the room with complainant. Description: A labourer, twenty-three years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, no hair on face except small dark moustache; wore blue-cloth paget coat, dark trousers, old soft black-felt hat. and brown spotted muffler. It is supposed he left Dunedin on the morning of the 12th ultimo by train for Invercargill or Timaru.

Stolen between the 9th and 13th ultimo, from the dwelling of James Hill, Maitland Street, Dunedin, a silver albert chain, a small silver locket with one of glasses cracked attached, a fourpenny piece, and four threepenny pieces ; value £1 3s. Chain and locket identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the shop of Elizabeth Sharpies, Victoria Street, Christchurch, a white-cotton shirt with linen plate down breast and linen wristbands, two white china plates with pale-blue leaf, and a novel, called “ The Bee Hunter j” value 4s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the waiting-room of the railway station, Wanganui, a swag, consisting of a red blanket, a blue blanket, a pair of moleskin trousers, a cotton shirt, a flannel shirt, five or six pieces of leather, a few buckles, and

two saddle-straps; the property of John Munro; value £2 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 7th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Railway Hotel, Invercargill, an old open-faced silver Geneva watch, No. 6344, jewelled in three holes, a ladies’ long gold chain with two folds of small gold wire round each link, a triangle gold seal with pale-yellow stone, stag’s head on one side and JWZ in Roman letters, on another ; the property of James William Lindsay ; value £l9. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the Empire Dining-rooms, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a thin grey-tweed waterproof overcoat, skirt pockets slightly torn, collar lined with brown silk; the property of John Turner ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the Central Hotel, Ashburton, a dark-grev-and-black check-pattern tweed ulster overcoat, yellow thread through material, flap pockets, black-cloth buttons, lower button on right side missing ; the property of P. A. Edmiston ; value £3 3s. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 17th ultimo a pane of glass was broken in the shop window of Alfred Bashford, Waimate, and a boys’ pair of elastic-side boots, No. 2 size, with four rows of nails, stolen therefrom ; value 11s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 14th ultimo, from the workshop of Frederick Crook, Te Aro Beach, Wellington, a mahogany case, about 7 inches long, 6 inches broad, and 1£ inches deep, without lock, containing two pairs of brass compasses with steel points, three pairs of steel dividers, scales, drawing pens, &c.; value £5. Identifiable. A lad, named Thomas Smith, who until recently worked in the shop, suspected.

Smith, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a shoemakers’ hammer, a pair of pincers, a knife, a waist iron, three awl shafts, a glazing iron, handle split and mended with rivets and bound with waxend, and a forepart iron; valne 15s. Identifiable. Thomas Horrocks, who worked in the shop, suspected.

Stolen between the beginning of March and the 18th of May last, from the hut of James Rose, Fourteen-Mile Beach, Westport, a single-barrel gun with a small brass plate on stock, a 24-hour American clock, two tin milk-dishes, and an American axe with handle ; value £3. Identifiable.

Between the Ist and sth of May last, the shop of William Saunders, Lichfield Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : A 25-lb. tin of Van Houten’s cocoa, a 14-lb. jar of tartaric acid, and three tins of Christie’s mixed lollies, about 12 lb. in each ; value £3 15s. 9d.

Stolen on the 22nd of May last, from the person of James Mazcy, in the bar of the Golden Fleece Hotel, Christchurch, a glaziers’ diamond, with ebony handle about 6 inches long, maker’s name “ Sherritt ” stamped thereon, a small notch in end of handle ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from the Coach aad Horses Hotel, Wanganui, a nearly-new pepper-and-salt-coloured Irish frieze ulster overcoat, with belt with a piece of white tape sewn on it, dark-tweed lining; the property of William Henry Fordcr; value £3 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 10th of May and 14th ultimo, from the store of Caldwell and Co., at Bull’s, four pairs of black-cloth trousers, a pair of long buff-colour leather leggings, twelve pairs of kid gloves, a piece of striped muslin, a silk umbrella, an ulster overcoat, 26 yards of dress material, two signet rings, and two tortoiseshell brushes ; the property of Joseph Nathan and Co.; value £ls. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Rudolph Lowie, who was employed in the store. Description : English, a draper, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, and small dark beard and moustache. He is at present residing at Sanson, near Bull’s.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, in Ballantyne’s drapery establishment, Christchurch, a brown-leather purse, 4 by 3 inches, with elastic band which has been broken and sewn together with thread, containing a £1 note and a cheque for £2 10s. drawn by Allan Makeig on the Colonial Bank, Christchurch; the property of Sarah Makeig. Purse and cheque identifiable. Suspicion attached to a woman, name unknown, supposed Irish, about fifty years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, stout build, hair turning grey, pale complexion; wore dark-linsey

dress and black-straw bat trimmed with black ribbon ; dirty dissipated appearance. Identifiable.

Stolen between January and April last, from the dwelling of William Bayley Bray, at Opawa, a tin case containing three surveyors’ boxwood scales, 12 inches long and 1 inch broad — one with thirty divisions to tho inch, stamped with a crown ; another with twenty divisions on one side and forty on the other side to the inch ; the other with ten divisions on one side and sixty-six on the other side to the inch ; and a sheet of paper with a scale marked thereon ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Slade, Aratapu, Auckland District, an open-face silver Geneva watch, No. 17928, “E. Le Mattre Amoy, J.P.,” scratched on inside of case; a silver guard with key on end, and 103. in silver ; value £5 10s. Watch identifiable.

Between the Bth and 11th ultimo the dwelling of William S. Roth, Upper Queen Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : Twenty-seven water-colour oriental pictures, about 24 by 18 inches, with gilt frames, two jack-planes, two trying-planes, two smoothing-planes, and three Crimean shirts. Identifiable.

Between 11.30 p.m. on the 19th and 8 a.m on the 20th ultimo an attempt was made to break into the pawn office of Joseph Hart, at Auckland.

On the 16th ultimo tho dwelling of George Fitness, Springbank, Ponsonby, Auckland, was broken into, and three £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand stolen.

Stolen during the night of the 26th of May last, from the person of Thomas Bates, while drunk in Auckland, an old openface silver English lever watch, a portion of the hour-hand broken off, second-hand missing, a small plain-link-pattern gold albert chain, and a gold locket with two blue horseshoes on one side, the other side plain, containing the likeness of a lady attached; a new black-cloth diagonal coat, edges braided, a brown-tweed vest, and a pair of elastic-side boots, partly worn, size 6 ; value £lO ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from tho Palace Hotel, Gloucester Street, Christchurch, a nearly-new light-drab fine-doeskin chesterfield overcoat, with velvet collar of same colour, buttons covered with cloth similar to the material in coat; the property of George Beatty ; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 20th and 22nd ultimo, from the shop of Richard Proudford, Taupo Quay, Wanganui, a double-breasted blue-serge tight-fitting sac-coat, edges bound with black mohair, two outside pockets with flaps, and an inside left-breast-pocket; value £2 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th ultimo, from the drill-shed at Auckland, a black ulster overcoat; the property of Edward Waddington; value 15s. Identifiable.
