Whereas on the 18th instant a goods train consisting of an engine, four loaded wagons, five empty trucks, and a brake van, which left Dunedin at 9.5 p.m. for Stirling, encountered at the Burnside Junction an obstruction consisting of a piece of railway iron about 12 inches long, which some evil-disposed person or persons placed between the points, which caused the engine .and the loaded wagons to run off the main line towards Burnside, and the empty trucks to run off the line into the platform, -doing considerable damage : Notice is hereby given that a reward of £250 will be paid by the Government to any person who shall first give such information as will lead to the arrest and conviction of the offender -or offenders. Description : English, a shearer and station-band, about fifty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, reddish beard and moustache turning grey ; when last seen wore light tweed suit, all of same material, and grey felt hat ; carried a swag. He has been about fifteen years in Otago, and recently worked at Mr. Smith’s, Greenfield Station. He said that he intended going to Mr. telling’s, Moa Flat Station, or to Dunedin, and thence to Oamaru. He was seen at the Lawrence Railway Station on the 7tli ultimo.

Walter Weston, alias Hedge, alias Edward Hedge, alias E. Joyce, is charged with having, between the 18th and 27th ultimo, at Christchurch, forged and uttered a cheque for .'£4 15s. to John Barrett, a cheque for £4 15s. to Arthur Walker, a cheque for £4 to Henry Hobday, and a cheque for £7 ss. to Henry Gabites. Description : English, a groom and shearer, twenty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build,. pale thin face, brown hair, no hair on face ; wore, black cloth paget coat, grey tweed browsers, white shirt, and soft black felt bat; horsey appearance. He lately worked for a Mr. Mason, a farmer at Doyleston. Three of the cheques purport to be signed by John Mason, and one by John Wild; they were indorsed, by the. offender in different names. Warrants for the offender’s arrest will be issued. - 1

Malcolm McGregor is charged, on warrant issued by the Outram Bench, with having, on the 3rd ultimo, at Henley, Otago District, obtained a £l-note from Amos McKegg by means of a valueless cheque. Description: Scotch, a farm manager, shepherd, and labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, dark complexion,'downcast -look, dark hair, dark bushy whiskers and moustache ; usually dressed in dark grey tweed suit and grey tweed hat.
