[From the Alexander Turnbull Library photographic collection. Built of wattle and daub in 1848, this house was typical of many erected in the early days of the Otago settlement. The framework consisted of saplings placed side by side, wattles being lashed across them latticewise and interlaced with flax or grass. The interstices were plastered with a mixture of clay, chopped tussock, and water, and the roof was thatched with grass. Owing to the scarcity of glass the windows were correspondingly small.
