Harris, of Invercargill, Chairman 1 of the Otago-Southland Council, addressed the meeting on “‘The Y.F.C. Organisation,” and also gave an interesting lantern lecture on “Manures and Crops.” A stock judging competition was held at the Pallia Annual Show;,

Mr. G. Herron explained the way to set about judgfhg a beast, after which members and others were issued" with judging forms ' and judged a line of heifers. Messrs. G. Herron and J. Ronald then judged the . animals and the members compared points, etc. There was a total attendance of .32 at the judging. EASTERN SOUTHLAND. Crookston; — Annual meeting. Reidy on “The Training of a Sheep Dog.” Otama.—- Films of agricultural interest exhibited by Mr. F. J. Holden, - Department of Agriculture. At the previous meeting Messrs. J. W. Woodcock and W. Faithful, Department of Agriculture, gave talks on "Linen Flax,” stressing the urgent need for areas to be sown. SOUTH OTAGO. Clutha Valley.— Talk by Mr. F. Mosley on ! “Farming” and also “Stud Sheep”; the speaker

made special reference to the picking out of good and bad points when breeding, and also dealt with the treatment of foot-rot. CENTRAL OTAGO. Upper Clutha. — Talk by Mr. G. C. Calder, Department of Agriculture, on “Limiting Factors to Production.” DUNEDIN. West Taieri. Tree planting scheme discussed. Mr. S. H. . Saxby, Department of Agriculture, addressed the meeting on the Y.F.C. Experimental Scheme.

Freehold Tenure of Land is Preferable to Leasehold Tenure” ; the affirmative team, consisting of C. Whatman and D. Stanley, was given the award. (2) “That the Spending of Money on Sport should be . Curtailed for the Duration of the War” ; this was won by the negative team, B. O’Neill, J. E. Williams, and C. Stanley. Mr. C. Millar acted as judge. Talk by the Rev.' Wilson on working his ‘ passage from New Zealand to London, and also his impression of Edinburgh. Milford. Arrangements for inter-club debate with Geraldine. Preliminary arrangements for stock judging competition to be held this year in North Canterbury.' Club debate: “That Farming in New Zealand Offers the Most Attractive Career for a Young Man.” Speakers; L. Livesay, R. Bisdee, and. J. Dale (negative) : N. Palmer, G. Caithness, J. Bolderston, and G. Crossman (affirmative). The judge, Mr. G. Mulligan, awarded , the decision to the negative team. At the previous meeting Mr. C. C. Leitch, Department of Agriculture, spoke on the Y.F.C. Experimental Scheme; he also outlined the progress made in the Department’s scheme of seed certification and efforts towards crop improvement. Pleasant Point —Profits from recent dance to be utilised ' in sending parcels to members overseas; the dance was again an outstanding success this year, £42 being taken at the door. Club debate, “That Farming Today is More Difficult than it was Thirty" Years Ago.” Speakers: F. R. Clarke, W. B. Cartwright, E. Chittock, and J. Olliver (negative) ; W. J. Skinner, D. Shires, R. S. France, and J. W. Crombie (affirmative). The judge, Mr. D. W. Onenham, . gave . his decision to the negative 'team. Waihaorunga.— Annual, meeting. Election of officers. MID-CANTERBURY. Ashburton. Business meeting. Election of new secretary. Final arrangements for interclub debate. Report on District Committee meeting by G. Watson. At the previous meeting a talk on the Y.F.C. Experimental Scheme was given by Mr. R. Inch, Department of Agriculture. • • Hinds. Presentation to E. Rhodes, who is shortly to be married. Teams selected to take part in the inter-club debate. Talk on “Debating” by Father Daley.. Club debate, “That New Zealand Devotes too Much Time to Sport.” Speakers: G. Watson, S. W. Keeley, and R. Watson (affirmative) ; D. Chisnail, C. Beaver, and E. Rhodes (negative): Father Daley acted as judge and gave his decision in . favour of the negative team. . Methven. -Each member \ spoke for five minutes oh "Is the Irrigation Scheme a Waste of Public Money?” or “Will the Size of Canterbury Farms Decrease when the Irrigation Scheme Begins to Operate?” The best speakers were: R. Penny (79 marks), A. McKay (78 marks), and R. Wightman (76 marks). Mr. Kennedy acted as judge.

Address by Mr. How, Herd-Improvement Officer, on “The Breeding of Dairy Cattle; Testing and Recording of the Herd”; the speaker also dealt with “Diseases of Dairy Cattle.” This address was given to a combined meeting of the Y.F.C. and Farmers’ Union. ' ' MARLBOROUGH. Blenheim. Letter of thanks received from the principal of Marlborough College in connection with medals given by the club instead of miniatures for the Y.F.C. Cup at the college. Duncan, Department of Agriculture, on “Wool”; Mr. Duncan also exhibited a sound film entitled “The Story of Wool.” HOROWHENUA. Johnsonville. Address on “Y.F.C. Affairs” by Mr. S. Freeman, Dominion Secretary, who also exhibited some sound films on agricultural and topical subjects. Social evening held in the Ohariu Hall on the occasion of a club member leaving for overseas; presentations were made on behalf of local settlers and the members of the club. Levin. — Selection of teams for district stockjudging competition. Talk by Mr. P. McGregor on “Seasonal Stock Troubles.” MANAWATU. Bunnythorpe. Discussion re Y.F.C. Experimental Scheme. Decided to support Feilding Club's proposal for stock show in November. National Savings Account to be opened with sum of £lO, to be supplemented by monthly subscriptions from each financial member. Remit to be forwarded to District Committee recommending that all clubs open a National Savings Account. Address by Mr. A. H. Faulkner, manager of Glaxo Laboratories (N.Z.), Ltd., on “Milk and its Products.” The previous meeting took the form of a Parents’ and Friends’ Evening; the Dominion Secretary, Mr. S. Freeman, and the District Secretary, Mr. H. de 0. Chamberlain, were present and exhibited some interesting sound films. Supper and dancing followed. — Discussion re “Y.F.C. Presentation to a member, and also a former member, who are going overseas. Decided that a letter be sent to Mr. F. J. Holden, former district secretary, who has been transferred to Gore, expressing appreciation of his services to the Y.F.C. in the district. Onga Onga.— Mr. J. W. Palmer, district secretary, spoke on Y.F.C. affairs and exhibited sound films. There were six visitors present by invitation. At the previous meeting it was decided to appoint “road-organisers” to contact eligible members, etc. Teams for debating were selected. The advisory president, Mr. E. S. Bibby, gave a short-talk on “Poultry.” Tikokino.— ln connection with a “member-ship-drive,” Mr. J. W. Palmer, district secretary, spoke on Y.F.C. affairs and exhibited sound films. About thirty members of the W.D'.F.U. and Farmers’ Union were present by invitation.

Manuel appointed acting secretary while Mr. Campbell is in camp. New member elected. A letter received from Mr. E. M. Bates, former district secretary, who is now acting as an instructor in the R.N.Z.A.F. at Harewood. Members gave short addresses, the first of a series for Mr. W. C.
