Ormond Memorial Cup” to Figure on Hawke’s Bay J.C.’s Autumn Programme.

Mr. W. Jewell, of Palmerston North, acted as deputy stipendiary steward at the annual gathering of the Wairoa County Racing Club last week. During G. Jones’ absence at Woodville the home members of his string are being attended to by R. Tiernay.

At a recent sale of thoroughbred yearlings in Auckland Mr. G. D. Beatson, of Hastings, purchased a halfsister to Statuette by Thurnham. She is called Lady Thurnham, and cost the local sport 275 guineas. A trio of locally-owned equines, in Golden Bubble, Spanner and Surveyor, have been nominated for the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap. After seeing the first day’s racing at Wairoa on Tuesday and declaring the weights for the second day’s meeting, Mr. H. Coyle left the same night for Napier en route to Wellington.

Hindi, the younger full-brother to Indigo, has been operated upon, and when next he lines up for business will do so as a gelding. He is a fine, bold-appearanced horse, but his conduct has been somewhat erratic of late.

The daughter of St. Girons and loora, who has lately been added to the active members of T. Quinlivan’s team, is making satisfactory progress in her education.

A meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club was held at Hastings on Friday afternoon, the president (Mr. M. Johnson) being in the chair. Messrs. J. Hart and J. Landels were appointed a deputation to wait upon the committee of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club with a view to obtaining the use of the latter club’s racecourse for trotting purposes. The chairman, Messrs. Lloyd, Piper and McFarlane .were appointed a programme committee. Mr. P. G. Dickson was appointed secretary, and Mr. A. I. Rainbow auditor.

The locally-trained and owned First Salute and Arch Salute will be likely runners at the approaching summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club.

At a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, held last week, it was decid'dfl. to initiate at the coming autumn meeting a race to be known as the “J. D. Ormctnd Memorial Cup,” of 650sovs. and a cup valued at 100sovs., presented by the T-cns of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. The stakes for the Hawke’s Bay Stakes was increased to lOOOsovs., and several other large increases were made to individual races.
