WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. NOTES ON THE COMPETITORS. (brom Our Wellington Correspondent.) Capital acceptances have been received for the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which takes Place on Thursday (May 1) and Saturnay. Excellent fields are engaged in а, 11 H ie events with the exception of the Hurdles, which has only drawn six acceptors. The weather at time of writing is showery, and this should have the effect of preparing the tracks for some fine contests, and some fast times should be registered. Mr. McGlashan, the club’s caretaker, has all the appointments thoroughly up to date, and visitors will appreciate the efforts of the club in this direction. Mr. A. E. Whyte, the club’s popular and energretic secretary, has all the secretarial arrangements well in hand for the meeting. In the opening event, the Hack Hurdles (one mile and three-quarters) should see Papanui (Papakura—Nukumai) in a favourable light, as he won so nicely for a beginner at Feilding. The New Zealand St. Leger Stakes (one mile and three-quarters) has nine runners engaged, and both Star Lady and Afterglow should command most respect. The latter was taken out of the Thompson Handicap. The three-year-old Demosthenes fillies should certainly be in the firing line when the winning post is reached. Amythas will carry No. 1 saddle cloth in the Plunket Nursery Handicap (four furlongs), and this Foxtonowned juvenile can be depended upon to run a game race. Mr. “Ngakonui” McDonald is represented by Murihiku and Rose Wreath, and the bracketed pair will probably go out favourite. No less than 21 horses have cried content in the Thompson Handicap (one mile). The writer looks to Rebekah and Kilrush to provide the winner. The latter won so easily at Tauherenikau on Saturday as to suggest some further successes in the near future. A nice field is assured in the North Island Challenge Stakes (seven furlongs), w.f.a. With Affectation, Royal Stag and Miss Mimic engaged, the trio named should give Gloaming and Desert Gold a good race. Royal Stag and Miss Mimic are owned by Sir Geo. Clifford, and will be bracketed on the machine. Cooing is top weight in the Silverstream Handicap (one mile) and after her showing at Tauherenikau, the Boniform — Ringdove filly should certainly be well supported. Another one that should have Cooing doing her best is Risingham, who is extremely well just now. Waimatao heads the list in the Railway Handicap (six furlongs) and as the Bezonian gelding is at the top of his form he should run well. Demos is reported in rare buckle, and will represent his new owner for the first time - • Ml 1 The afternoon’s racing will be brought to a.> conclusion by the running of the Tinakorl Handicap (six furlongs). Astinome, fresh from her Wairarapa success, and Wonder arc a pair that should take an active part in the finish.
