HAWKE’S BAY.

Bindie’s Success at Waiptfkurau— Guanaco Changes Hands—Youngsters at the Otatara Stud —Death of Belgian Maid —Lord Astolat in Work at Napier Park—Mr. W. G. Stead’s Brace of Promising Two-year-olds Being Prepared — Lalla Rookh Placed or; Easy List—Vermillion Taken Up Again. NAPIER, Monday. Bindie’s success at the Waipukurau meeting on Easter Monday gave W. Kirk his first score since he has taken charge of Mr. W. H. Gaisford’s team. Bindle was bred by the late Mr. H. Gaisford, who for a great number of years was president of the club. On his decease the committee of the Waipukurau Jockey Club wished in some way to perpetuate his memory, and therefore changed the name of the Two-year-old Handicap to that of the Oringi Handicap, for it was at Oringi that the deceased sportsman had been domiciled for several years prior to his passing away. Guanco, who put up such a good fight with Tari in the Ohiti Maiden at the Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting, when he ran second, has been purchased by Mr. H. M. Campbell. Guanco was purchased for 30 guineas as a yearling, but when he was passed on lately to Mr. Campbell trainerowner W. Stowe got a big advance on his original outlay for the son of Formative and Lady Atholine. Guanaco, like a host of other good ones at present earning stake money in the Dominion, was bred by the late Mr. G. P. Donnelly. Last year’s early foals produced at the Otatara Stud have recently been weaned. The batch of babies consists of Manus, who is a son of Wolawa and La Notte; a colt by Wolawa— Float, and a colt by Mountain Knight —Swallow, the latter mare . being a half-sister by Merriwee to that great old battler of times gone by, Sfray- *■' bird. Backing the prime goods at Waipukurau would not have proved the easy way to wealth, for had a ticket been taken out on each of the first favourites, from a betting point of view a debit 'balance of nearly a couple of pounds would have been shown. The individual jockey to have followed would have been L. Nodder, for out of a trio of seats he landed the goods on two occasions. First Salute and Lady Kilworth were steered to victory by him, and had a ticket been purchased on each of his mounts a profit of within a few shillings of half a century would have resulted. Belgian Maid went the way of all flesh, horse and otherwise, last week, the daughter of Martian and Hebrew Maid succumbing to a heart attack while working at Waipawa. Wakatere has left P. Smith’s quarters at Hastings, the reason for his departure being that his new owner (Mr. A. R. Brightwell) resides in Masterton and is. anxious that the gelding will be on hand when he wants to see him in his track efforts. Lord Astolat is in work at Napier Park. Since last seen out the son of Advance and Maid of Astolat has been unsexed. Hepta, the two-year-old half-bro-ther by Demosthenes to Theodore, Sublime, Sir Moseley, Diavolo, Evadne, and others, »is having a let up from the strenuous life. Mr. W. G. Stead has a brace of nice two-year-olds being got ready for business on the get-away at Napier Park. One is a full-sister to Lady Ball, while the other is a filly by Demosthenes —Lily White, and therefore a half-sister to Blended. Lily White is a great bred mare, for she is by Martian —-Cruciform, by St. Leger Forme, by Nordenfeldt —Formo, by Sterlingworth—Pulchra, who was sired by Resicrucian, the latter being the only horse who ever silenced the mighty Musket at weight for age. Lalla Rookh has been placed on the resting list. The half-sister to Eligible, Bon Ton and The Toff—for Lalla Rookh is by Feramorz out of Class —has never given any indication that she is in the same category as a racehorse as her well-performed relatives, but it has been noticeable that the female productions of Class are not of the same quality as her' sons. This has been proved by the efforts of Steinhall, Exclusive, and First Class, who were also daughters>?gif Class.

Isaeus (Demosthenes —Lady Delaval), who has been out for a spell for quite a lengthy period, is to be taken in hand again by trainer K. Quinlivan. This educator is also further strengthening his team by the inclusion of a two-year-old filly by Merry Moment —Royal Mary. She is a fine, evenly-constructed filly, and appears to be just one of the most solid ones got by the defunct Eng-lish-bred sire.

After a lengthy rest from active work* Vermillion has again been placed in commission. The All Red mare, who gives every indication that the holiday has agreed with her, is an inmate of A. Quinlivan’s establishment at Hastings.
