HAWKE’S BAY.

Eligible and Lady Kilworth Rejoin Active Brigade — Dusky Eve's Wanganui Cup Engagement—Waipukurau J.C.’s Annual Meeting— Attractive Stakes Offered — Local Horses Engaged at Dannevirke — Tari and Hindi Galloping Well.

NAPIER, Monday.

Mr. T. E. Whelch has put Eligible and Lady Kilworth into active commission again. To all appearances the resting stunt has done both of them the good that was anticipated. The locally-owned stallion Demosthenes got another lift along the successful path of late by the victories of one of his daughters, Afterglow. Two Cups on end reads like good business.

The nominations received by the Napier Park Racing Club on Friday night for their approaching autumn venture are not so bulky as was the case last season. Anyhow, there are a number of fair-class performers listed for the various events, and a couple of good days’ sport may be anticipated next month at the trysting grounds at Greenmeadows. Trainer S. Lindsay has secured a long lease of Tavistock from Mr. D. McLeod, of Waipukurau, who evidently is not going to take a hand at the owning portion of the business, for he now has no horses in work, noi’ has he had for some time past. Local backers went for Dusky Eve in a royal fashion for his assault on the Egmont Cup on Wednesday, and though he could but get second to Afterglow they lost no money over the deal, for they got better than bank rates of interest for their investments. Nearly all of those who supported the locally-owned son of Signor and Swift are going to be on him again in the Wanganui Cup, for the information has been widely disseminated here that he will be a lot better for his efforts at Egmont, and is sure to be in the fighting zone when the finale of the Wanganui Cup is due. The Waipukurau Jockey Club are distributing 1140sovs. in stake money at their annual meeting, to be held on Easter Monday, and their attractive programme should meet with the appreciation of owners and trainers. The club, according to the Rules of Racing, were not compelled to give the amount in stakes that they are doing, but the aim of the committee has always been of the forward grade, and that accounted for no paring down of the prize money. As usual, Hawke’s Bay has contributed generously to the nomination list of the Dannevirke Racing Club, for the following district horses have been nominated for their autumn gathering next week: —Sweet Corn, Chortle, Woodlark, Lady Kilworth, The Speaker, The Pagan, Woolhara, Palm Oil, Hendra, Tigritiya, Hymarty, Tari, Asterial, Orateur, Asterina, Mirk, Hindi, Magistrate, Arch Salute, First Salute, Torchlight, Cross Words, Dribble, Retard, and Silver Tongue. The foal son of Martian —Rouge, purchased by the Douglas Estate at the late dispersal sale of the Elderslie thoroughbreds, is closely related to that top-liner Sasanof, for he is got by the same sire, while his dam, Rouge, is a half-sister by Charlemagne 11. to Ukraine, who produced Sasanof.

Tari, who recently changed ownership, is putting in the best of work on the get-ready at Hastings, and whenever he is next lined up for business his winning chances must be of the very best possible sort. Hindi, the two-year-old brother to Indigo, is moving in an attractive fashion in his exercises at Hastings, •and this good-looking, well-propor-tioned son of Mystification and Mungista, who gallops like his wellperformed brother, is sure to make his mark in the pages of turf history. Sweet Corn seems to have got a bit more than she is entitled to in the President’s Handicap at Dannevirke. A pound short of ten stone appears to be a bit on the severe side, more especially when the rest of those weighted, with the exception of Chortle, are receiving such a great concession in weight from the Aus-tralian-bred mare.
