OBITUARY.

MR. FRED. YONGE.

The death of Mr. Fred. Yonge, secretary to the Otahuhu Trotting Club, was one of the regrettable happenings of the holiday period in Auckland. The deceased was an old Auckland boy, and had always been identified with the sporting life of the province from his early days. As an amateur rider from the time he used to win pony races as a boy in the hunting field, at the meets of the Pakuranga Hunt Club, and in hunt club racing events at Ellerslie and in other parts of the province, he was for a long time conspicuous. He held accountancy positions in the city until he received the appointment of secretary to the Otahuhu Trotting Club, and he held similar positions for the Pakuranga Hunt Club and the old Otahuhu Racing Club, and was always highly esteemed for his geniality of manner and for his business ability. The Otahuhu Trotting Club have lost a capable official, and the various Auckland, suburban, and some of the country clubs a valuable assistant, as his services were invariably sought after in helping at other than his own club’s meetings. When he was a prominent figure as a rider the late Mr. Fred. Yonge won the Auckland Polo Cup on Larry and flat races on Raglan and Leorina, and the Pakuranga Hunt Cup on Hawthorn after being second on Sunray and Rebel Chief in successive years, and won minor events. His prowess was acknowledged when he was awarded prizes for his horsemanship at Auckland A. and P. Association’s shows. The remains of Mr. Yonge were laid to rest in the Waikaraka Cemetery at Onehunga. The sympathy of numerous friends will go out towards Mrs. Yonge and relatives in their loss.
