DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING.

The record meeting experienced on Boxing Day by the Dunedin Jockey Club is another sure indication of the progress which is being made by this enterprising racing body, and augurs well for the success of the autumn meeting of the club, to be held on February 13 and 15 next. A substantial increase has been made in regard to the stakes to be distributed during the two days, and the meeting is assured of wide patronage from all over the Dominion. The Dunedin Cup, one mile and a-half, has been raised in value to 1500sovs, and now ranks as one of the most important handicap events in the Dominion. The field is certain to include many of the best horses in training, the strong inducement offered by the club being calculated to merit the attention of quite a number of owners in the North Island. The Champagne Stakes, of 350sovs, six furlongs, should provide an interesting contest among the crack two-year-olds, and will form a strong attraction on the opening day. The chief sprint event is the Publicans’ Handicap, six furlongs, which is now worth 500sovs, and will undoubtedly attract a splendid entry. Other first day events are the Autumn Hurdles, of 200sovs, one mile and three-quart-ers; Gladbrook Handicap (hack conditions), of 150sovs, one mile; the Apprentices’ Plate, of 115sovs, six furlongs, for three-year-olds and upwards that have not won a race of the value of 40sovs or upwards at the time of starting; Stewards’ Welter Handicap, of 200sovs, one mile; and the Berwick Handicap, of 130 sovs, seven furlongs. On the second day, the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, of 650sovs, one mile and a-quhrter, will occupy chief attention, when another good field, including the majority of the Cup horses, should be found competing for the valuable stake. Great interest will also be centred in the

Hazlett Memorial Plate, of 500sovs, one mile, a weight-for-age event for three-year-olds' and upwards. The Hopeful Handicap, of 200sovs, five furlongs, is specially reserved for two-year-olds, and strong representation is anticipated from the ranks of the juveniles. The sprinting division will have an opportunity of annexing the 300sovs stake attached to the Flying Handicap, of six furlongs, while the Owhiro Hurdles, of 150sovs, one mile and a-half, will again see the jumping brigade in action. Other events to be run on the concluding day are the Warrington Handicap, of 130sovs, seven furlongs; Waihola Handicap (hack conditions), of 130 sovs, six furlongs; and the Abbotsford Welter Handicap, of 200sovs, seven furlongs. Entries for all events, excepting the Apprentices’ Plate, are due with the secretary, Mr. H. L. James, on Friday, January 17, at 5 p.m., when forfeits for the Champagne Stakes must also be made. Entries for the Apprentices’ Plate are due on Friday, February 7.
