POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING. The Poverty Bay Turf Club will hold their summer meeting on the Makaraka racecourse, Gisborne, on Saturday, February 8, the day following the Gisborne Racing Club’s fixture. The club have allotted the sum of £l4OO as stake money for the eight events figuring on the card, no race being of less value than 150sovs, so that there is every inducement for owners and trainers to patronise the meeting, apart from the fact that the Gisborne races of the day before makes up a combined two days carnival by the respective clubs. The chief event to be run at the Poverty Bay meeting is the Turanga Stakes Handicap, of 300sovs, one mile and a-quarter, which is certain to attract a good field of local and visiting horses. The Stewards’ Handicap, of 200sovs, six furlongs, will engage the attention of the sprinting division, who, earlier in the day, will have an opportunity of competing in the Telephone Handicap, of 150sovs, five furlongs, a win in which will incur a penalty of 51b in the Stewards . Other events on the programme are the Farewell Handicap, of 150sovs, six furlongs and a-half; Cook Hack Handicap, of 150sovs, six furlongs; Hurdle Handicap, of 150sovs, one mile and a-half; Maiden Scurry, of 150sovs, four furlongs and a-half; and the Welter Handicap, of 150sovs, one mile;

The programme is in every way an attractive one to owners, and offers ample opportunities to them of annexing a good stake. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. D. R. DeCosta, on Friday, January 24, at 8 p.m.
