WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING. Although the majority of owners and trainers are at present busily occupied in making preparations for the Christmas and New Year meetings they should not overlook, the fact that nominations for all events (excepting those with hack conditions) to be run at the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, on Wednesday and Saturday, January 22 and 25, close with the secretary, Mr. A. E. Whyte, on Friday next, December 20, at 9 p.m. The same evening forfeits are due for the Wellington Stakes, 1919, which is to be decided on the opening day of next month’s fixture. ‘ Entries for races with hack conditions (including Trial Plate) close on Monday, January 6, at 9 p.m. On both days of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer gathering some first-class sport should be witnessed at Trentham, as the remunerative character - of the stakes offered by the club will undoubtedly prove a strong incentive to owners throughout the Dominion to patronise this important fixture. Chief interest is centred in the Wellington Cup Handicap, of 1300sovs, one mile and ahalf, and that the entries for this event will be both strong in quality and number is a prediction that can be ventured with every confidence. The Wellington Stakes (five furlongs), in which a good field of two and three-year-olds are expected to see the post, will also form a big first day attraction. The principal sprint event, the Telegraph Handicap. of 750sovs, six furlongs, should induce a liberal nomination from the right quarter. Other first day events consist of the Nursery Handicap, of 400sovs, for two-year-olds, five furlongs; the Anniversary Welter Handicap, of 400sovs, one mile; in addition to three events for hacks, viz., the Trentham Apprentice Handicap, of 200sovs, one mile; Trial Plate, ot 200sovs, seven furlongs, and Ruapehu Handicap, of 750sovs, six furlongs. The second day’s racing at I rentham promises to provide some exceptionally good sport, among the

events which are set down for decision on January 25 being the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, of 750 sovs, one mile and three furlongs, the Kelburn Plate, of 400sovs (weight for age), four furlongs, and the Douro Cup Handicap (hack conditions), of 400sovs, one mile. Some sterling contests and quite a few surprises have been witnessed in connection with the three races mentioned, and with the prospect of fields of more than average size and quality being on hand to dispute matters at Trentham next month there should be some excellent sport in store for patrons. The Metropolitan Handicap, of 400sovs,-six furlongs, will see the sprinting brigade in action on the second day of the gathering, while the two-year-old division who have not won a race exceeding the value of 200sovs at time of starting will have a further opportunity of annexing a valuable stake in the Fitzherbert Handicap, of 300sovs, five furlongs. The remaining events on the second day’s programme are the Mungaroa Welter Handicap (hack conditions), of 200sovs, one mile; January Welter Handicap, of JOOsovs, one mile; and the Camp Handicap (hack conditions), of 200sovs, six furlongs.
