WESTLAND RACING CLUB.

OLD-TIME GATHERING. The first Easter meeting of the Westland Racing Club was held in 1867, fifty years ago. It was a two days’ meeting, and the principal event each day was won by the late Mr. S. Garforth’s b.g. Kohler, which defeated such horses as Mocking Bird, Renwick Lad, Bella Donna, Candidate, Selim, and Gamester. The initial meeting, although postponed from Easter Monday on account of the weather, was a very successful gathering. Mi’ H. Cassidy, of Springfield, was among the competing owners, Archy and Bella Donna running under his colours. The trotting races in those days were handicapped on the yards system, over long distances, the principal trotting race being five miles, The gathering of the old established and popular club of the

West Coast in April next should draw together a large attendance of the public. On the day following the jubilee meeting, the Westland Trotting Club will supply a day’s sport on the Hokitika trctting track.

Heart was made a better favourite than The Summit, while Con also carried heavy support. Thruster had command from Con passing the stand, but the latter was in charge before the straight was entered. A faulty jump, however, let Black Heart up to h m, and the son of All Black, revelling in his task, ran home a four lengths’ winner from the fast-finishing Wooloomooloo, who was two lengths in front of Glouria. The whole of the seven acceptors went to the post for the Second Hack Flat Handicap, Raumanuwhiri, in consequence of her forward running on the opening day, being installed a better favourite than Lord Ainslie, with Gold Shot next in request. The last-named, who ran two thirds at the Gisborne meeting the previous week, left the barrier smartly, and never gave his opponents a chance, winning by three lengths from Raumanuwhiri, with Brunswick a ccuple of lengths away, third.

Seven were saddled up for the Sunderland Stakes (one mile), which was generally voted a good thing for Teka, who was nicely handicapped. At the Gisborne meeting Teka defeated Cleft by a head in the Gisborne R.C. Handicap (one mile), the latter having 11b. the better of the weights. The pair met subsequently in the Turanga Stakes (one mile ard a-quarter) on the opening day of the Poverty Bay meeting, when Cleft, whc was in receipt of 51b. from Teka, won by a couple of lengths, Teka running sixth. In the Sunderland Stakes Cleft was handicapped to give Teka 71b., the latter thus meeting the son of Multifid on 121 b. better terms. The public at once installed Teka a pronounced favourite, with Perfidy better backed than Cleft, the trio carrying the bulk of the investments. Watchful was prominent in the early stages, Perfidy and Dribble both being handy, but Cleft and Teka were depicted racing in the rear. The latter pair both put in brilliant runs crossing the top, the latter being in command as the field swung round the straight, Perfidy being his nearest attendant, with Cleft lying third. In the run to the

post Cleft made a b g effort to get up with the favourite, but E. Manson kept Teka going nicely and scored a length victory, Perfidy being half a length away, third. Dribble was fourth.

Ten took their place at the barrier for the Maiden Scurry Handicap, the disappointing Tornea counting sufficient admirers to send him out favourite. Kohinahina, Headache and Karema were all accoided good support. The last-named was quickest to 'find her feet, and she never allowed the other contestants to get up to her, the daughter of Gazeley winning by a length from Multive, with Headache a length away, third. The lastnamed gives promise of rewarding his owner, Mr. L. McKenzie, with a win in the near future.

Blackall’s finishing effort in the Welter Handicap <n the opening day was not lost sight of by backers, who installed the disappointing son of All Black a firm favourite for the Rose-

land Hack Handicap (one mile, Hylami and Grand Idea being most fancied of the other five contestants. R. Manson kept Blackall well up with his field, and as the field negotiated the bend into the straight he was nicely placed, being just in behind the leader, Hylami, with Grand Idea handy. An exc.ting race to the post ensued, Blackall, despite bis substantial impost of 10.6, sticking t,o his task in game style and accounting for Grand Idea (8.12) by a neck, with Hylami a couple of lengths away, third. Carlysian was made an odds-on favourite for the Publicans’ Purse Handicap, w th Spectual and Potentiality best backed of the other eight starters. The favourite had every chance to win, being first into the straight, but he failed to stall off a challenge by Potentiality, who got up in time o score by a length. War Tax was a similar distance away, third. The meeting was brought to a conclusion with the running of the Farewell Handicap, in which a field of nine took their places at the barrier. Zeus was backed down to a little bet-

tar than an even money favourite, n like Golden Glade, Hexton and Lady Alic a were all given spirited support on the machine. Mandoline shot out iiom a good start and piloted the field into the straight, where Mistic and Zeus joined issue, a splendid race resulting in favour of M stic by a length from the favourite. Hexton, who finished resolutely, got up into third place, a length away from Zeus, while Pearl Marie was fourth. Mandoline tired badly in the run up the straight, finishing well back The results were: — STEWARDS’ HANDICAP of 150sovs. Six furlongs. 3—C. J. Bennett’s b g Gazique, by Gazeley—Pauleen, 9.4 (A.
