GISBORNE RACING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING.

MULTIFUAL WINS CUP'A The Gisborne Racing Club opened their summer meeting on Thursday in fine weather, a record crowd assembling at the Park racecourse. The course was in excellent condition, both the track and lawns bearing evidence of the effective work spent in bringing them up to their present creditable standard. The racing was brimful of interest, Mr. H. Coyle’s adjustments being productive of many stirring finishes, to which Mr. R. H. Skipwlth’s even despatches contributed to no little extent. The day’s proceedings passed off without the slightest hitch, the energetic secretary, Mr. H. E. Dodd, and his staff doing everything in their power to add to the enjoyment of patrons. The to taiisator staff handled the sum of £13,899, as compared with £11,536 for the opening day of the 1916 summer fixture, an increase of £2363. Blackheart was elected an odds-on favourite for the opening event, the First Handicap Hurdles, with Bodenham and Brunswick most in request of the other five starters. Bodenham was in the lead passing the stand the first time, with Con and Brunswick most prominent of the others. Racing along the back Con was on terms with Bodenham, while the favourite could be discerned making up some of his leeway, but his fencing was not of a high standard. In the run to the post Bodenham drew away from Con and registered a four lengths’ victory, the favourite being a couple of lengths away third. An inquiry was held into Blackheart’s running, but after hearing the evidence it was decided to take no action. Brunswick was fourth. Fortunate was the only withdrawal from the Maiden Scurry,, leaving 20 horses to go to the post. Woodrow was made a pronounced favourite, Pao, Metallum, Master Iney and Tornea being most fancied of the others. After a tiresome delay the field got away, Treasure King being- in the lead, with. Karema, Tornea and the favourite all handy. The first-named was challenged by Woodrow in the straight, but E. Young kept Mr. Hall’s gelding hard at it and managed to secure a victory from the favourite by a length, Karema being a similar distance away third. Treasure King paid over a score for his surprise victory. The Gisborne Cup next occupied attention, and in a field of 10 Multifual was elected to the position of favourite, Mr. F. J. Lysnar’s bracketed pair, Blackall and Cleft being second in demand, with Potentiality and The Summit most fancied of the others. Downham was first to show out, with Potentiality and the favourite as his nearest attendants, this being the order as the field passed the stand the first time. Going out of the straight Cleft ran up into second position, while Multifual went up to the leaders. Entering the straight Cleft and Multifual had charge of affairs, while Ladogeur and Teka both made a forward move. Cleft dropped back in the race up the straight, Multifual finishing strongly and winning by two lengths from Ladogeur, with Teka a length and a-half away third. Blackall, who finished resolutely, was fourth. After the race the winner was brought on to the lawn, where his owner, Mr. C. Buske, was presented with the cup donated by Mr. •J. R. Murphy, cheers being given for the owner, trainer (C. Morse) and jockey (W. Young) and also for Mrs. Buscke.

The Te Hapara Hack Handicap attracted a field of nine, Perfidy being installed favourite, while good support was forthcoming for Flash Lady, Crosswords and Gold Shot. When the barrier was released Hythread was the smartest to get going, but was soon displaced by Gold Shot, who carried on the running to the turn, where the favourite drew on terms. Once the field straightened up for the run home Perfidy managed to stall off a challenge by Crosswords and win by a length. Gold Shot succeeded in gaining third place a couple of lengths away from Crosswords. The Gazeley gelding Gazique wound up a good favourite for the Flying Handicap, Zeus and Carlysian being the best backed of the other seven starters. The favourite left the barrier smartly, and was never headed, winning by four lengths in comfortable fashion from Carlysian, with a similar distance separating the third horse, Marimba. Zeus was fourth.

Despatch Carrier, Mistic and Pearl Marie were the only starters of the 10 acceptors for the First Welter Handicap (one mile), in which they were supported in the order of favouritism named. Despite the fact of only a trio being engaged, the race proved of a most thrilling character. Mistic headed his two opponents in the early stages, but with half a mile completed the trio were almost racing on terms. The greatest excitement prevailed as the three contestants raced almost in line over the concluding furlong, Despatch Carrier lasting the longest and gaining half a length victory amid intense enthusiasm from Pearl Marie, who was a length in advance of Mistie at the finish.

Eleven were saddled up for the Railway Hack Handicap, Lord Ainslie being entrusted with most support, while Spectual, War Tax, Rosvear and Carlatour were all the medium of spirited support. The last-named was first to show out, and C. Stowe, keeping the General Latour filly hard at it all the way, notched a victory by a couple of lengths from Spectual, who was a similar distance in advance of Rosevear.

The afternoon’s racing was brought to a close with the running of the Park Handicap, in which there were half a dozen starters. Tavistock was a strong favourite, while Hexton and Golden Glade followed him close in the betting. Lady Alicia assumed command from the start, but soon gave way to Golden Glade and the favourite, while Hexton joined issue once the straight was reached. Tavistock, however, carried too many guns for his opponents, and succeeded in defeating Golden Glade for first honours by three lengths, with Hexton a similar distance away third. Tokl was fourth. Castalia got into the ruck and was galloped on, with the result that she was scratched

for the second day’s racing, and will be a doubtful starter at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s fixture this week.
