CONCLUDING DAY.

TEKA WINS BIG EVENT. The meeting was concluded on Saturday in threatening weather, but, nevertheless, the attendance was large, and an ideal afternoon’s sport was witnessed. Three favourites won during the afternoon, and there were no alarming dividends, the public being fairly correct in their calculations. Teka won the Gisborne Racing Club Handicap by a head after an exciting struggle with

Cleft. The totalisator staff handled £16,706, as against £14,583 on the concluding day of last year’s summer meeting, making a total of £30,605, as compared with £26,119 last year, an increase of £4486. Blackheart was sent out a warm favourite for the Second Handicap Hurdles, with Bodenham and Woolloomooloo best fancied of the other four starters. The public summing up of the chances of the son of All Black were fully justified, for he easily accounted for his opponents, winning by seven lengths from Bodenham, who was four lengths in advance of Woolloomooloo. A dozen went to the post for the Maiden Scurry Handicap, Tornea being the prime selection of backers, though Woodrow was close up in the betting. Karema was first into the straight, but Woodrow, finishing fast, secured a victory from the Gazeley mare by a length and a-half, with the little-fancied Kohinahina a neck away third. Perfidy, on the strength of her first day’s win. was made a warm favourite for the Taruheru Hack Handicap, with Grand Idea and Flash Lady the best backed of the other five starters. The favourite showed the way into the straight, and, maintaining her lead, won by a length and a-half. A great race ensued for second honours between Hylami and Flash Lady, the former prevailing by a nose. Grand Idea was fourth.

Eight were saddled up for the Gisborne Racing Club Handicap. Gazique being favourite, with Cleft and Teka next in request. The favourite was quickest away, but Downham soon headed him, while Teka ran up into second position going along the back stretch. Teka was in front before the bend was reached, while in the straight Cleft threw out a hot challenge, a great race between the pair resulting in favour of Teka by a head. Downham was three lengths away third, and the favourite fourth. A quartette were saddled up for the Second Welter Handicap, in which Golden Glade and Zeus were better fancied than Pearl Marie. The lastnamed, however, succeeded in defeating the favourite by a nose after a sterling finish, Zeus being two lengths away third.

Hexton carried the confidence of backers in the Gisborne Stakes, in which there were only four starters, and he easily won by three lengths from Hythread, who was a length in advance of Lady Gazeley. Eight lined up at the barrier for the Awapuni Hack Handicap, Lord Ainslie being the actual favourite, with Gold Shot, Nowra and Colonnade next best fancied. The race resulted in Colonnade winning by a length from Brunswick, with Gold Shot half a length away third. A hot favourite in Tavistock failed badly in the Final Handicap, in which Potentiality also claimed many supporters. The w’inner turned up in Watchful, who won in comfortable fashion by a couple of lengths from Mistic, with Lady Alicia a length away third. The results were:—
