TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB.
The summer meeting of this club is not so important as the one which follows it in the autumn, or which is styled the autumn, for it hardly seems quite autumn when the second meeting is held. The summer meeting is, however, a popular one, and draws the people from all the adjoining districts and from Northern and Southern Taranaki, and as far south as Wanganui, many of the racegoers of the last-named centre dividing their favours between Taranaki meetings (which includes Stratford) on the one side and Manawatu and Marton on the other. It is a great holiday-mak-ing time on the West Coast of the North Island, and New Plymouth is one of the favourite places because of its seaside and mountain resorts, many of the visitors putting in a week or more in the locality. The acceptances for the meeting augur well for the opening day, and will be found on another page.
The handsome Gold Cup, valued at 150sovs., to be presented by the Auckland Racing Club to the winner of the Auckland Cup on Boxing day, this trophy accompanying the £2500 stake. The Cup is designed and manufactured by Messrs. A. Kohn, the well-known Auckland firm of jewellers.
