MARTON AND THE IMPORTED GOVERNMENT SIRES.
Marton, who won the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap in 1913, has had a surprising career. Two years before, at Hastings, he almost severed a tendon of a fore leg through an over-reach and that placed him hors de combat for a long while. The same thing occurred again, and for a long time he had an ugly leg, and it was thought that he would not stand a genuine preparation. His Great Northern Hurdle Race victory was the first important one achieved in a jumping race by a son of one of the horses imported by the Seddon Government, but there have been winners by each of the horses brought out. Tyranny. Gienapp, Singlestick, Malachi and Lupin have each sired winning representatives, and faster horses than the gets of Lupin from the same mares have not been bred, from which it can be inferred that that horse was wasted; indeed, had Lupin been better patronised with first-class mates it is easy to believe that he would have been an even greater success. His progeny were endowed with great speed. Tyranny was by many regarded as the best horse imported of the lot, but he died before getting much chance to make a name for himself. Gienapp got a good many useful performers, and Singlestick a jumper or two. Marton’s sire, Malachi, left nothing better than that gelding, who has had nothing but bad luck or he would have added more victories to his scroll no doubt. He will be 11 years old next foaling.
