TURF RESULTS.

TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s luck was in on "Wednesday of last week, when the summer meeting was brought to a close, as the day was fine, the course in splendid order, and the holiday crowd must have been as large as usual, if not larger than on "Wednesdays. There was plenty of business doing, and the totalisator turnover reached to £28,458, which, thortgh it was £2511 10s. less than on that of Anniversary Day last year, was satisfactory, and with the total for the first day brought the amount handled to £62,475 10s., a decrease of £B4B 10s. for the two days. The racing was also very good, the judge (Mr. W. Ralph) having some close finishes to decide. Mr. F. Edwards, who started in place of the club’s official, met with a big measure of success, while the management all through left nothing wanting, Mr. R. Wynyard and his assistants getting the races well off to time. There were two enquiries during the afternoon, as a result of which Robinson (rider of King Lupin), for interfering with Lady Penury was fined £lO, Thompson (rider of Bogey), for interfering with Denise Orme, being made to pay a similar amount. Mr. A. Gordon was the stipendiary. The victory of the Grafton gelding Harlestone over another Australianbred one in Thoolomi in the Moana Handicap could not have been very largely anticipated by his connections, and it was only narrowly effected. Both raced better than they did on the opening day, and so did Gluetanus, whose rider on the first day met with bad luck in losing a stirrup leather. Lady Gwendoline and Plenipotent, who were well supported, failed to get near the front, and Harlestone, who is trained by F. Stenning, pa d the best dividend of the day. In tile next race, the Takapuna Maiden Hurdles, Tararu Jack, the favourite, suffered a head defeat by Brookfield, who forced the pace. The big Prince Eddie got within a length and a-half of the pair. The pace was all on, and the mile and a-half and a hundred yards was covered in 2min. 58 3-ssec.

There were six starters for the Suburban Handicap, for which Denise Orme was only a little more supported than Tinoreka, the last-named winning and the Wanganui mare being last, runn.ng as unaccountably bad as T.noreka ran well, the last-named winning by two lengths and a-half, Positive and Gold Necklet being close together as they crossed the line, with Bogey also close up. The supporters of Denise Orme were sore, but many of them stuck to the stable and followed Master. Lupin in the next race, the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, which, though King Lupin was a very strong favourite, proved a good betting race as between the others, with the exception of Sold.er. Master Lupin was second favourite, but only a little better supported than Mullingar, while Loloma and Goldsize had plenty of backers. It was early apparent that King Lupin’s mission was to go to the front, and it was soon seen that Lady Penury and others were out to keep him busy. A slight interference checked Lady Penury between the five and six-furlong distances, and King Lupin then led and kept his place into the straight but the pressure was on and Lady Penury got up, and then Master Lupin, who started a little better than on the first day, came along over the last three furlongs, and gathering up the leaders woi in good style by a length and a-half from Lady Penury, who beat King Lupin a length. Goldsize, Loloma and Soldier were well together after the placed three, and Mullingar finished last.

It was a big field that lined up for the Hobson Handicap, a favourite being made of Cultriform. who was an outsider on the first day. Rekanui was second in demand. Neither had a look in, Cultriform finishing in fifth place with Rekanui further back. It was left for Carl Rosa’s daughter Waiuta to cut down General Joffre, the third favourite, and the betterbacked Independence and to win by a neck, but with 151 b. overweight. Ritasea was a good fourth, and after Cultriform came Erroneous, Angelas and Homeric, the last-named carrying Scott, who went to scale at 7.11, overweight also being carried by several others.

A field of fifteen went out for the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, for which Housewife, Ring Lupin, Blueform and

Scrap o’ Paper were fancied most. Hiero was always prominent, and after a good race beat the big outsider Torotoro (a favourite on Saturday) by half a length, Ring Lupin, Blueform, Housewife and Master Florence being their nearest attendants. Good dividends were paid on both first and second horses.

Hopye was very solidly supported for the Waiwera Handicap Hurdles, and so also was St. Lewis, who was feeling the ground, judging by the way he ran in his preliminary. Tenacious was third favourite, and then came Black Northern, who ran a sterling race, but had no chance with Hopye at the weights. Marconi, whose form was in striking contrast to his first day’s showing, was uways in second place over the last round, and was ridden determinedly to keep him from trying to stop. His supporters received nearly as much as the backers of Hopye got.

Speculation was very keen over the Anniversary Welter Handicap, Achilledes, Selection, Soultane (who the public persistently stick to) and Glenspire each being made the medium of heavy investments. It was, however, left to less fancied ones to fill the places, and it was clearly under the belief that Tact would not get a mile that she was not befriended to a greater extent. Loloma had raced earlier in the day, and Munster was

not be ng ridden by his pilot of Saturday (B. Deeley). The public were astray in their judgment, and Tact won just as handily at the end of the mile as she had done over the five and a-half furlongs on Saturday, ar,d Munster had something less than the same margin over Loloma, who had Acbilledes, Selection and Marble Star nearest to her, though others were not ridden right out.
