AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.

The next racing fixture in the Northern province is that of the Avondale Jockey. Club on the 24th and 27th of this month. There is every reason to anticipate that the meeting will be an eminently successful one, for the nominations, which close to-morrow (Friday) evening, promise to be heavy, besides containing the names of some of the best-performed horses in the province, while the jumping events are sure to attract a good number of outside candidates. The stewards of the club were approached with a view to postponing their first day’s racing on account of the Mayoral elections falling on that day, but unfortunately the circumstances were such that it was practically impossible to accede to the request. The stewards of the club were most anxious to make a change so as not to interfere with the polling of the Mayoralty, but the law prevents them from starting a two-days . race meeting on a Saturday and continuing the following Wednesday, and this was the only alternative that was open to the club in view of other racing fixtures, and the fact that a number of Southern horses are already on the scene awaiting the Avondale fixture. Since the last meeting at the popular suburban course a. number of improvements have been carried out, particularly in connection with levelling and banking ths course proper, that are sure to be much appreciated by owners and patrons alike.
