CANTERBURY.

I /(.From Qur Own. Correspondent.) ‘ \, . ' CHRISTCHURCH,. July 11. It Is reported that Formeden, of G. p. Greenwood's team, now in Australia, , has gpue wrong, and that he will not be able to fulfil his engagements at thq, Aiistralian Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The Reckoning, who claims an engagement in the Grand National Hurdle race failed while being schooled over the hurdles just before the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting. However, the horse has been showing good form since, and if he comes over to New Zealand he will assuredly start one of the favourites for our National. Two members of E. Cutts’ team, Flitaway and Somersault, left for Wellington to-night in charge of H. Cutts. Somersault, who. is engaged in the New Zealand Cup, has not been seen out in public for some time, and his running at Wellington will be eagerly watched by patrons of the stable. Flitaway is probably at her best just now, and if the going is not too heavy at Trentham she should give a very good account of herself. In a conversation with G- O’Donnell the other day I gathered that he will take a team over to Sydney to the A.J.C. spring meeting, los Angelos will probably be the bright star of the team, and it is reported that quite a small contingent of patrons of the stable will go over to see the horses run. I understand that G. P. Pine has accepted a retainer to ride members of O’Donnell’s team next season. Outlander is once again on the retired list, having contracted muscle soreness. Ito continues to show good form over the schooling hurdles, and if he keeps going should win a good hurdle race shortly. Several visiting horses have put in an appearance at Riccarton to be prepared for events at the Grand National meeting. P. Hogan came from the South last week with four horses, Honest Tom, Silver Blaze, Embrasure and Prospector. They are all jumpers and will be seen out all going well in some of the steeplechase events at the meeting. Deerslayer and Mauri have arrived at Riccarton and are being trained by J. Holmes for jumping events at the National meeting. Both these horses have won over country. Provocation is one of the favourites for the Winter Cup. Te Arai, Corazon and Antarctic are the popular fancies for the Steeplechase, while quite a number are fancied for the Grand National Hurdle R J. Ellis passed through Christchurch last week on his way to Wellington with My Lawyer and Optimeform. J. Beale, who went up by the same boat, will be riding for the stable. White Cockade has gone amiss and will not fulfil his Wellington engagements. St. Aidan is getting through his schooling tasks in a satisfactory manner. He is a fine cut of a jumper and should win a big hurdle race before long.
