WANGANUI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

WANGANUI. October 17.

Frank Lind has a mare by Powerful and another by Waiuku in work. The latter is a five-year-old, and had never been handled until Frank took her in hand a short time ago. She is a good sort, and should pay her way. The daughter of Powerful is a very fine-looking mare, and is one likely to do well on the track. Lind turned Overtime out after the Rangitikei meeting, and the Muketry gelding is still enjoying a spell. G‘eorge Laing intends taking Euroco to Waverley. This gelding has been going along nicely since the Wanganui meeting, at which he ran very well indeed considering the short time he had been up, and is likely to win a few good races on the flat, while later on should make a name for himself over the sticks, as he has already shown his ability to jump. The Lark and John left for Wellington on Saturday. They should run well in their engagements, as they were very fit when they left here.

W. Rayner took Astraea and Coolstream to Otaki, scoring a win and a second with the former, and a third with Coolstream. The latter got a very bad start, otherwise would have won the Maiden. The recent wins gained by Shannon Lass and Astraea point to the run of bad luck which has for so long followed Rayner having turned, a fact which will be noted with pleasure by the numerous friends of this deserving trainer, who, it is understood, has Astraea under lease for a term. In the form she is now in she ought to be heard of again very shortly.

A. Hall intends taking St. Bill, North-East and Egotist to Auckland for the spring meeting. The trio are looking particularly well, and a win or two should come Hall’s way. Mr. A. Morse, who was so successful as starter at the last Opunake Racing Club’s meeting, has again been engaged by that club for its forthcoming fixture. It is pleasing to see some of the clubs giving young starters a chance, and good should come of it, especially when such men as Mr. Morse are selected. He is one who is bound to 'be successful if given the opportunities, and may be depended upon to give satisfaction to the club, owners, and the public. At Hawera T. Goddard is keeping Tiptoe moving along, although he has no engagements at present. Goddard is also training Silva again, the spell the son of Sylvia Park has had having apparently done him a lot of good. Mulga Bill is another in the same stable who has only commenced work. Maharanui is in steady work, but it is reported that he may be leased for stud purposes shortly. Crucinella was not brought back from Australia by M. Gardner when the latter returned from Sydney last week, but has gone on to Melbourne, where she will be spelled till after Christmas, and then put into work again. She contracted a severe cold at Randwick, and this led to her withdrawal from all spring engagements. Gardner brought back the colt Allure, which accompanied the mare to Sydney, but he also suffered from a cold while on the other side. Private information received here states that Jack Stewart, the wellknown Wanganui horseman, who has been riding in Sydney recently, sustained a broken shoulder when Grateful fel 1 with him on the third day of the A.J.C. meeting. This is very bad luck for Stewart, whose services were in great demand -in hurdle races on the other side. It is to be hoped he will make a speedy recovery. ’ Shannon Lass and Waikaraka are in the sale list. The former should do well on the West Coast, as she is a very useful mare, being able to both

sprint and stay. She is in splendid condition now, and should not be long in following up her Marlborough success. Waikaraka should also be able to pick up a race or two on the Coast.
