CANTERBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, October 18

The. next payment for the New Zealand Cup is due on Friday next. It is fully expected that there will be a tig thinning-out, especially among horses weighted under 7st. Of the Cup horses training at Riccarton, nothing is going better than Los Angelos, one of the favourites for the race. The big son of San Francisco is doing some hard work, and cut out a mile and a-half the other morning in time good enough to win any big race with his Cup weight up Husbandman and Taskmaster, Cutts’ Cup candidates, are doing all that is asked of them, the latter striking me as showing more staying ability than his stable companion. Husbandman is as sound as a bell, and being a big, upstanding horse, can stand any amount of solid work.

W. Clarke has Ingoda in rare fettle, and quite a number of Riccarton people think that this mare will be very handy at the finish of the New Zealand Cup. She has proved most conclusively that she can stay, and if in her best form on November 5 she is certain to make a bold showing. Oamaru will attract a contingent of Riccarton horses this week- In the principal event seven of the eight acceptors claim engagements in the New Zealand Cup.

Nominations for several events to be decided at the C.J.C. Cup meeting close on Friday next. Acceptances for the Stewards’ Handicap are due on the same day. Bookmakers who intend betting at the New Zealand Cup meeting must send in their applications on or before November 1.

Masterpiece, who won the Dunedin Stakes, is a full brother to those classic performers Kirriemuir, Glenow’et and Madam Madcap. Sandstream, by winning the big race at Napier Park, has had his weight raised to 8.3-

Tawaki was scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 10 a.m. on October 11. At 4.15 p.m. on the same day Nyland was scratched for all engagements at the Cup meeting. Gunboat and Adjudge, who won at

Dunedin last week, do not incur any penalty for the New Zealand Cup. Formless has been responsible for some smart gallops lately, and is one of the locally-fancied candidates for the Stewards’ Handicap. Sunburnt, who was sent over to Sydney for the Epsom Handicap, returned to Riccarton on Friday last in charge of his trainer, J. R. Franks. Avarice, a two-year-old daughter of Treadmill —Golden Crest, will be a starter in the Wellesley Stakes. Equitas, who arrived from Sydney last week, Lawn Rose and Glenspring are the first of the visiting horses to put in an appearance at Riccarton to .be prepared for engagements at the Cup meeting.
