CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.

TE ARAI WINS THE STEEPLECHASE.

The weather turned out cold and dull for the opening of the Grand National Meeting at Riccarton on Tuesday. The attendance, however, was large and representative, among those present being His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington), the Prime Minister "(Sir Joseph Ward), and the Hon. J. A. Millar. The course was in capital order, and the racing generally was interesting, and free from mishap. Audax broke his hind leg by striking heavily one of the jumps in the Grand National, and had to be destroyed. The Steeplechase produced a capital display of jumping on the part of the majority of the competitors. There were one or two spills during the day. but in no case did riders receive serious injury. The totalisator investments amounted to £20,406, as against £20,794 on the first day of last year. Eighteen bookmakers were licensed inside and 36 outside the enclosure. Master Paul took the lead passing the stand and soon opened up a very big gap. Although he struck the last-hur-dle heavily, he won with the greatest of ease by half a dozen lengths. Glen 9.13, Sharpshooter 9.13, TaWhakd 9.9, Adjudge 9.6, Amato 9-£>, Manillus 9.3, Royal Marine 9.3, Penza 9.0. North-East was left several lengths, and Wimmera and Manillus were first to break the line, but were at once joined by Dreadless, with Sharpshooter, Electrakoff, Tawhaki and Nyland handy. Rounding the top turn Sharpshooter and Wauchope were in front, with Electrakoff, Tawhaki, Penates, Dreadless and Nyland at the head of the others. Sharpshooter showed the way into the straight, Electrakoff, Wauchope, Wimmera, Dreadless, Tawhaki and Penates following. Approaching the distance Wauchope was done with, and Dreadless and Nyland. moved up. Inside the distance Nyland took charge, and won a good race by a length from Dreadless, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Electrakoff. Wimmera was half a length further back, followed by Tawhaki, Penates and Sharpshooter. Time, Imin 44 4-ssec.

Lovell showed the way over the first fence, followed by Sir Lethe, Kiatere, Te Arai, Audax, and Bullworth. At the fence at Cutts’ Audax broke his leg. There was no change along the back, and entering the straight Lovell and Sir Lethe still showed the way, the order of the others being Te Arai, Le Beau and Bullworth. Passing the stand and Cutts’ the second time the leading division was practically the same, but Eurus, Capitol, Loch Fyne, Tyrannic and Red McGregor had tailed off and Nero had been pulled up. Before reaching the sod wall Te Arai had run up to Lovell, and at the brush fence had taken charge, and from that stage, holding his own, won comfortably by three lengths from Lovell, who was two lengths in advance of Sir Lethe. Kiatere was fourth, half a length further back. Bullworth, Capitol, Tyrannic, Loch Fyne, Dr. Bill and Red McGregor following at considerable intervals. Time, 7min 15 2-ssec.

The following was the result of the principal event:— THE AUSTRALIAN HURDLE RACE, of 1300sovs. Three miles and a-half, less 92 yards. Mr. F. br g Tundulya, syrs, . by St. Jude—Minerva. 9.0 1 Messrs. Robbins and Egge’s b g Kulcurna, syrs, by Finance—Agnes, 10.11 2 Minato, 9.0 3 Coir was first to show in front, and he

led over the first hurdle, Kulcurna, King’s Ransom and Brownie being his closest attendants. ’ Jewel Case fell at the hurdle near the turn. Coir led Into the straight the first time, and passing the stand had King’s Ranson, Obi and Treat as his nearest attendants. Coir showed the way past the stand the second time, at which point he held a tenlengths’ advantage of King’s Ransom, who was followed by Minato and Obi. At the mile post King’s Ransom had command, and at five furlongs from home Kulcurna and Minato were disputing the lead, with Coir and Obi next in order. Kulcurna led round the home turn, but Tundulya caught him 50 yards from the post, and drawing ajway won by three-quarters, of a length. Minato was four lengths away, third. Time, 6 min 44%sec.
